Tho stranger atonce drew a knife and stabbed Kelley in the left side, in tho region of the heart, alter which he hurriedly fled. The injured man was removed to his room atthe Grand Central, where a pl i attended him. Chief Seavey was authorized to procure proper badges for the fire and police alarm operators. Thomas . Murray submitted a proposition in which no statea that he would build a 44 by 100-foot engine house on the southwest corner of lot 4, in block 145, fronting on Eighteenth street, and rent it to the city for aterm of ive vears at a rental of §200 por month. HARD ON HUFF. While Seeking n Wa nt He is Himself Ar- rested, Yesterday forenoon Chief Seavey received aletter from Marshal Camp of Greeley, Colo , giving a description of ono J. W. Huff who is wanted there for obtaining money under falso pretenses. The crime alleged was committed last July. Huff was reported as being a railroad man, but before the oflicers started out to look him up he walked into the station, not to give himself up, but to tile a complaint against & woman. It seems thut Huff has been employed in the B.& M. yards at Pacific Junction for some time and only came 1o Omaha yesterday to see his mistress, While in the woman’s house at 1205 Jackson street trouble ensued and Huff’s mistress drow a revolver and taking aim pulled the trigger. For some reason the shell did not oxplode and the revolver was quickly taken away. Some words followed and Huff, with the pistol in his possession, sought police head- quarters te file o complaint against his mis tress. While making his complunt to Ser- geant. Whalen, Detective Ellis discovered that Huff was a fugitive and he was placed under urrest much to his surprise. The testimony of several wit- nesses disclosed the fact that Brown bad poured three gallons of gasoline in a tub, and was heating it when tho exp! 20k place. In the clothing department thero was no end of men’s overalls, jean pants, duck clothing, shirts, ete., made by the Rob- inson Notion company, M. 1. Smith & C and Katz-Nevins company. Then came boots and shoes made by the Morse-Coe Shoo company. Omaha ~ pearl buttons were pointed out with tho remark, ““We aro doing well with them.” At this point a representativeof the Western Plating Works interrupted and was given an order, Mr. Hayden remarking, “Weo do not sell plating, but we give the plating works con siderable work.” Attention was then called to Omaha mattresses and Omana furniture. With that the way was led to the basemept where the grocery stock is carried, und it looked ' ns if Nebraska had captured the whole depart- ment. There were Nebraska cured meats, hams, dried beef, lard, ete. The Pave Soap company and the Quealey Soap company of Omaha both had in full lines of their laundry and toilet soaps. Then there was a full line of tinware mado by the Omaba Tinware company and the Western Tinware company. Omahu compressed yeast and the German dry hop yeast ocoupied prominent places on tho shelves A full line of the Haarmann Vinegar com pany’s geods was also on sale. ‘There was a vile of boxes as big as a house containing Garneau's crackers. A full line of the goods made by Farrell & Co. was pointed out, such as sirups, pre- serves, mince meat, etc. Then came a large stock of Omaha meal, hominy, etc. There was flour that was made 1 Omaha, West Point and Humboldt, Neb. ‘There was a full lino of extracts, baking powders, coffee, etc., put up by the Consoli- datea Coffee compa: Neur by was a fine showing of pickles put up by thé Gedney Picklo company. Thero were baskets from the Omaha basket factory and brooms from Omaha’s two broom facto- ries. In another place was & car load of Ne- braska papor and no end of canned goods put up by the Blue Valley Canning company of Edgar, Neb. Mr. Hayden remarked that he had ordered a car load of starch from the Beatrice Starch compauy. Hayden Bros, manufacture their confectionery from Nebrasku beet sugar. The attraction was the big fake, which Managers Prince and Mardis bhave been advertising for a week, acd which turned out tobea six-day, two-hour-a-day bicyole race, with Messrs, Holton, Denman, Wertz ana Fixley of this city and Ab. Mockett of Lincoln as the contestants, The nature of the affair was announced just be- fore the start by Manager Prince, who stated that the prizes were & handsome gold stop watch first, a diamond medal second and two silver medals for third and fourth. Shokoquon Chemical Co., Burlington, Ia. — - SOUTH OMAHA., City Council Meeting, At the meeting of the city council last evening tho first thing considered was the matter of the $1,745.15 overpaid to Norton Bros. by the city clerk, was reforred to the committee of the whole, where it was decided to lay the thing on the table. The Twenty-fourth street paving squabvle was brought up by Attorney Offut, whno de- manded whether the council proposed to accept or rejoct the last monthly estimate of tho paving company, which was not allowed at o previous meeting. When the matter came to a vote it was decided by a vote of 6 to 2 not to allow the last estimate of the asphaltum company. Mr. Offut asked the names of the councilmen voting against the measure, The following names were fur- nished: Rowley, Conley, Doughterty, Bow ley, Haley and O'Rourke. Messrs. Walters and Woods votee aye. Sucs for Money Det. Thomas O'Neil and John McMillan, both real estate men, made a bet in regavd to tho prico that O'Neil would rocetve for a lot. An Interesting Decision, Judge Leuy hauded down an interesting decision today in the case of Robert Parks against Michael Donnelly. The defendant has been in reland for nearly a year, and it was claimed by the attorney for Donnelly that the atiachment issued against the de- fendant for an unpaid plumbing bill should be dissolved.
