CURSE OF M'QUADE. New York Reeorder, It is n pet theory of mine that in a groat city like Now York a man wastos time which might be more profitably spent going to the theater., By this statoment I do not mean to reflect upon the morality of tho stage. It is simply wconclusion, as a result of exporionce, that more interesting characters can bo soon overy day upon the streots than upon the boards. Ispocially is this true of lifo on the oust side in that curious mixture of nationalities—the Irish- Americans. ] o, for instance, the case of Jack MeQuade. When I first met him, about three years ago, he w yoars old, a slim, reckless fellow, with no care for tho present and still less for the morrow. 1 was walking down Catherine streot one hot night in Au- gust smoking a meerschaum pipe when Jack saluted mo with: “Good evenin’, sir, and would yo givo me the loan of a light?" I handed him the pipe, at the same time taking in ata glunce tho thin, pinched face, the oyes st close togothor, the tattered shirt, the close-cropped hair and the general aiv of rocklessnoss about him. He lit a cigaretto and turned away with a polite “Thank ye, s1 istrolled onward about twenty feet thinking that here was a fit subject for aseat in the Black Maria, when my pipe wus suddenly jerked from my lips and disappeared as if by some necro- mantic spell. 1t did not fall to the sidewalk; it did not rise into the air, Tt simply vanished. [f 1 had been hit by a minie ball [ could not have been more surprised. It was three months before I learned where my pipe had gone. Then Juck told me ho had jerked 1t from my mouth with a piece of black silk thread, which he d cunningly dropped over the bowl when he lit his cigarette. The audicity of the theft captured my admir- Since that time I have watched the deyelopment of the young rascal with aver increasing interest. Jack wus the younger of four brothers, He was the black sheep of the McQuade family. His father was a ’longshoreman of horculean stature and had an _inordinate love for the black bottle. Jack’s mother was a very large womunand jolly as all women are. His three brothers wero fashioned on a generous plan, all big, broad- chested, powerful men. Mrs, McQuude ren o boarding hoase. As she wasa popular woman her house was alwuys full. She prospered. Pinding that there was always *‘the bit and the sup” in the house, McQuade refused to work, and at last became an intolorable nuisance in the house. When full of bad whisky ho would beat hiswife and alarm the neighborhood. He served three terms on Blackwell’s island, but always returncd more ugly and morose. At last patience ceased to be a virtue, and at a family council it was formally resolved that he must go. To this Mes. MeQuade strenuously objected for a long time, saying with teavs, “'B’ys, he'll put the curse on us!” But as the boys had been raised in enlightened New York they had no fears of an old Irish supor- stition. And so when McQuade came in on the following evening little Jack said to him in the presence of the family: “Rather, we've talked it all over to- gether, and we've made up our minds that as ye won’t be dacent yo mus_ go and never come back,” “Does that go?” exclaimed McQuade, looking around at the determined faces. His wife began to cry and would have thrown herself upon his breast had not Patrick restrained he®. Then all vhe boys exclaimed in unison like a lot of collegians: STt do.”? MeQuade was dazed for a moment. But he did not weaken. A look of black hatred and malice came into his foce as he dvéw himself up to his tallest stature and raising his hand he cursed his family. Said he: “May the curse of McQuade be on ye! May hell's bells follow ye! May ye dry up and wither away liko the shamrock on the purple mountain when the winds come from the seal” Then he strode out of the door, leaving his wifo fainting on the floor and her hoys standing around her with pallid face: He never came back. There was gloom in the house for more than a week. But as time olapsed the curse was forgotten by the boys, but not by the mother, who knew that the fortunes of the McQuades had been blasted. After his father’s banisnment little Jack quietly developed into the most noted character in the Fourth ward. He joined an athletic club, and by hard work soon became the most expert boxer of his weight in the club. His "daily compan- ions were thieves and dissolute charac tors. He was noted for the fearlessnes of his practical jokes, such as breaking plate-glass windows with a brick and then coolly telling the angry owner that the culprit had run around the corner. His days were passed shooting milk pitehiers from fire escapes with a small rifle and breaking beer mugs as they stood on the bar with bullets. One of his most notorious achiovements occured about a year-ago. One of his mother hoarders had taken an intense dislike to him because of his tricks and lost no chance to irritate the boy. Ho naturally resented such treatment. One morning Jack met the lamp-lighter of the ward. Said he: *Jack, what time do you come down Oak street in the morning when you're putting out the lights?” **Ahout 4 o’clock,” replied the lamp- lighter. “Well, will you wake me in the morn- ing. I wantto go fishing?” SOf course 1 will. You tie a piece of tarred rope to your thumb. Leave the window open and L'l pull until you come to the window.” Jack went home and when the obnox- ious boarder began to snore he dropped when the blow fell, Ho first noticed it in alittle flock of crimson upon his handkerchief. From that moment he knew that no horb that ever grow on hill or in valloy could stay the sure pro- gress of the curse within his veins. Slowly he wasted whilo the dread de- stroper with awful irony held out hopes of recovery, and as his flame of lifo bogan to flicker, 1ike ncandlo that burns low in its socket, ho drank deep to drown his terror, In Burns’ bar room he would stand with o glass of flery liquor in his hand, and say bofore ho tossed it off “Ill eronk when the leaves bogin to turn, but some 0" youse blokes "Il go be fore I do.' Phenomenal fostances Cited By an Omaha Mun. “T have travelled pretly extensiv during the last fifteen — youwrs,” said Ilugene G. Burton, of Omal at the Hotel Cadillac, says the Dotroit ree Press, “and I have made a special study of hotel clerks’ memovies. You are aware, of course, that a good memory for names and faces is one of the most desirable faculties that a hotel clork can possess. The majority of men who travel are just vain enough to enjoy be- ing remembered and called by namo when they enter a hotel after an ab- senco of several months, or even years, and the man behind the office counter who can always ‘call the turn’ is speciully valuable to his employer. The most mavvellously gifted man in this respect that L ever knew was a clerk in the Palace hotel in San Francisco. Not being blessed with a good memory my- self, T am unable to recall nis name, but, that i immaterial. As an illustration of what this man to whom [ refer could do in the line of re- membering names and faces, I will re- iate an exporience with him of my own. When the Kn iplar conclave was held in S 0 in 1883, I landeddin that city early ono_ufternoon with o party of eastern Knights who made the journey over in a special train, More than 400 of us went to the Palaco hotel, which can accommodate a small army, you know, and as rupidly as pos- sible we filed up to the register, in- seribed our names thercon, and wero sent to our respectiye rooms under the guidance of bell boy I took a bath, hanged wy linen, and in the course of an hour or two strolled down to the oftice to see if there was any mail for me. 1 approached the clerk’s desk, but before I'had time to utter a word Mr. Clork nodded pleasantly to me, and with ap- parent solicitude inquired: “How do you like your room, Mr. Burton, does ‘306 suit you?” Well, sir,I was dumbfounded. This man had never scen me before in his life, except for the half minute I had stood before him while 1 wrote my namo on the register; fully 425 persons had passed before him inside of two hours, and yet he was abie without theslightest offort to remember my name and num- bor of the room he had assigned me to. As you soe, there is nothing whatsoover out'of the ordinary in my appearance, and for the life of mo I wnuln\n't under- stand why [ should be so readily recol- lected by this mild-mannered clerk.
