Thrilling Stories of a Disaster in Foreign Waters, EXD OF THE ST. JOHN'S DIVORCE CASE. Meeting of the Federation of La- bor at Birmingham. OF COL. DENIAL CLARKSON. DROWNING OF A SHIP'S CREW. ‘The Enterkin Wrecked tm the North Sea— Thrilling Marine Disasters Loxpox, Dec 14.—The list of disasters to shipping, caused by the most recent of the Many severe storms which have swept over the British Isles this year, continues to receive ad- ditions almost hourly. To give a complete list of these maritime casualties would be an ex- pensive and practically useless task, as no American craft seems to have suffered. The only exception, so far as known, to this rule is in the case of the British ship Enterkin, Capt. Sinclair, 1.614 tons, which left Portland, Ore., April 19 for Hull, where she arrived on tember 27. After discharging her cargo and reloading with iron the Enterkin sailed a few days ago for Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Daring the gale of Saturday night ‘the Enter- kin was driven ashore on the Galloper sands, in the North sea, and Will most likely becomes , while, so far as known, all ber crew, thirty-one hands, with the exception of one ap- preniice, have been drowned. TRYING TO SAVE THE SAILORS. The Enterkin was sighted ot ing by the fishing smack Brito: ing to Ramegate. The Briton’s Pride, in face of the terrible gale blowing and though she was frequently swept from stem to stern, plungi repeatedly ‘through heavy green sobs ‘which threatened to engulf her, for hours made « series of most gallant efforts to reach the doomed Enterkiu in the hope of being able to save some of her men. A few of the latter, the kipper of the Briton’s Pride afterward re- | ported, could at first be seen clinging to the damaged masts and yards of the ill-fated ves- sel, but, one by one, they seemed to grow weak dnumb and were swept from their among the rigging and soon disap) be- neath the raging seas sweeping to ard of the Enterkin. At last it seemed to the fishermen who manned the Briton's Pride that the last of the Enterkin’s crew had been washed overboard to his death, and the little smack Was upon the point of wearing ship for safer Waters when one of the fishermen insisted that be could see a moving object im the tottering tuizzen mast of the wrecked ship. When the skipper of the Briton’s Pride was | Convinced that this was an actual fact be re- newed his eflorts to bring his small craft under the lee of the Enterkin. After another and disheartening struggle with winds an: Waves, during which the brave fishermen were | time cut of number drenebed to the skin until | they could hardly move from cold and ex |haustion, the Briton's Pride was clever | Drought to under the lee of the stranded vessel and while huge waves pounded her the fisher- men rescued & poor lad named Lewis, an ap- prentice, who was found more than half dead, lashed to the rigging of the Enterkin's mizsen mast. HONORING THE BRAVE LIFE SAVERS Lewis this morning was safely landed ot Ramsgate Pride. The lucky apprentice and the brave fishermen are the lions of the hour about that part of the coast and an effort is to be made to obtain for the gallant fisherman the medal awarded for saving life at sea by the Royal Hu- maue Society. A public subscription to pre- sent the fishermen with e suitable testimonial of the public esteem in which their conduct om this occasion is Leid is aiso talked of. No hope is expressed that any of the Missing members of the crew of the Enterkin have been saved. Tugs have been sent out to look for auy survivors who may bave been j lucky enough to have caught hold of some wreckage wien washed overboard, and who iene LABOR MEN IN SESSION.
