M. Levinson called at this office this morn- Ing and denied tne truth of the stories that Judge Levi has been circulating ut Levin- son’s cruel treatment of his mother, Mr, Levinson also denies ever having invited her from Europe. A younger A. Leovinson of New York, sent for her, After living with him for four months sho wrote to M. Levin- son that she was sick while there all the time and wanted to_come ana live with him in Nebraska, She came here and stayed with Mr. Levinson two months and during this time he sent money to help support her enildren in Burope. When his wife refused to send any more money she began quarreling aad went to live with ber brother, I Katcky, After she had been with him two months she became sick. M. Levinsou states that he sent her a medi cal man, Dr. Walker, and _also paid for all ner medicines, Sue asked for a ticket to go to Now York, ard he offered w furnigh the money, but she backed out and would mot go, While she was dangerously sick her brother, 1. High Rentals in South Omaha, “Do you know why there aro so many empty houses in South Omaha?’ asked o citizen today of a BEk reporter. “No,”” was the reply. “Well, I will tell you. It is all on account of the hoggishness of landlords. It is a fact that no one can truthfully contradict, that rents are fully 25 per cent higher in South Omuha than they are in Omaba, and 40 per cont higher than they arc in Council Bluffs, The landlords here paid almost nothing for the ground on which their houses stand and they evidently intend to make tenants for both houso and ground every year. This avbricious spirit on the part of landlords keeps fully 80 per ceut of the persons employed in South Omaha from living in this city. Hundreas of the porsons working hero live in Omaha and Council Bluffs, where rents ousnt to be higher, but in fact are 5o much cheaper that mouey is saved by living in those citics and_paying car fare in addition, to got to work in this city. JUDGE. DUNDY SUSTAINED, United States Supreme Court On the Subject of Attorneys' Fees, When Judge Caldwell of the Uuited States circuit court was in Omana a year ago, e made a ruliug which stunned some of the at- torneys before the Omaha bar. The case in point was a foreclosure suit which had been transforred from the stato to the federal court. The attorney sought ts obtain a fee in the case. Judge Caldwoll beld this to be unreasonable and unjust. He ruled that at- torneys in suc cases were not unlulml tc fees, ~ There wus a score or more of simila sults pending in the court at tho time the juc wholesale disregard for tno feel- ings of attorneys gave rise to a great deal of comment and disatisfaction in legal cir Judgo Dundy of the distriet court, sitting with Juago Caldwell at the time, declined to concur in the raling of the latter. [t will ba remembered that the former said at the time that his court had, for y customary attorney’s feo in fo and such ruling hiad been afirmed tices Milier and Brever during su terms of court in Omaba, He saw, he said, no reason for changing his mind outhe sub- ject.
