The scene of the fire was William Maloney's residence, 125 Graham avenue, and the building, to- eether with almost all its conteats, was o total wreck. Mr. naod Mrs, Maloney were awakened by a smell of smoke, ana on opening the door of the upstuirs room where they were sleeping thoy at once- saw that the house was on tire. Thoy nast- ily scized a few articles of cloth ing and started to go downstairs The heat was almost stiffling, but by dint of hard exertion they maunaged to get out of door They then went to the house of F'red Lamb, which s quito a distance away, and hiaving scen his wife and child safely noused, Mz, Malonoy went to tuo farm box aud sent for the fire depar st nent, When 1t arrived the flames had secured such headway that it was with dificulty that anyth was saved. Up to the time when MT. and Mrs, Maloney left the hotse the fire ‘had been merely smouldering, al though it had ntly been burning for a loug time, Shortly after they loft of the tront windows fell out with a sh, and the wind alinost instantly fanned cmbers into flames that spread with great rapidity. After long and bard work, towever, the fire was extinguished, but the house and all its contents were aimost a total ioss, The damago is estimuted at about £2,000 on the house and a like amount on tue furni ture, The furniture was ncarly new and of a costly pattern. The house is insured for $£1,500 anda the furniture for $2,000. How the fire ovigimated can not Lo kvown posi tively, although it is supposed to have started in some way from the base buraer downstairs. Siortly after the occupants of the voows upstairs awoke the stove feil with a crash, tue floor beneath it having been bursed’ completely through. Had Mr. and Mrs. Malouoy they must have perished in the flames, as the hallway, when they left, was so hot th could scarce s through'it. Wright to coutinue their wrangle in regard to tne conl supply. All the members were present excepling Waite. Prosident Weils, who was chairman of the committeo appointed Monday night to ex- amine the coal question, reported that it haa been unable to agree, and he therefore called ou the members to make their individual roports. Schoentgen roported that he bad not changed his opinion since Monday night, and that he still neld that W. W. Wallace's Walnnt Centerville coal at 305 whs the lowest. He wus opposed to taking any risks on any other kind of coal that might be marked at a lower figure. Hunter stated that he too was of the same opinion as when he stood up for the Carbon Coal company Mouday night. The Excello lump, at §5.40, had been used in the schools for two years and the board ran no risks in tuking it agatn. He also called attention to tho fact that a number of the ralways con- tering here are using that kind of coal in large quantitie Suoentgen retorted that the railways are ' the habit of buying almost any kind of coal that the Carbon Coal compauy had a notion to furnish, on account of somo magic influence someoue couneceted with the com- pany scomed to possess. Wells sided with Huater, Stacy siaed with Schocutgen, while Suubert left” it blissfully uucertain as to where he stood until the vote was taken, A motion was n ward the contract to Wallaeo for nis . but it was los Schoentgen, Stacy and Shubert voting in favor of and Wells and Hunter against i It was evigent that both sides had come to ¢ and that nothing could be gained by cussing and_discussing any more for the present. It was accoraingly decided to postvone further action until Saturday evening, when another meeting will bo held, Schoentzen wanted to put in a clause forbidding Hunter from ordering any more coal in the meantime than would sup ply the schools for a week, but Hunter told him be had only been ordering 1t by the loa anyway, so the clause was not inserted, was mutually understood, however, that Schoentgen should not have to lie awake nights for fear Hunter was coming a sharp trick over bim, In too meautime the Carbon Coal company is furnishing the coal.
