It is havd to say what was tho cause of the accident. Dr. T, B, Lacep, who made an ex amination of the body, was of the opinion that Brightman was a victim of apoplexy, but he formed this cpinion more from the man's make-up than from any symptomns that could be noticed. The platform, so far as ul d be seen, was free fromice, sothat there was apparently no reason for his fulling. unless the theory of apoplexy is the correct on Brightman has been in tho three months, he having come hece from Creston, where iie was . tridge carpenter’in the employ of the Burlington Railway com: pany. He bad been in the employ of th motor compauy only a short time. and his tellow workmen do not seem to have been very well acquainted with him. About turee weeks ago he brought his family to this city from Creston, and has been living with them at the corner of Avenue A and Twen fifth street. He leaves a wife and four chil- dren, the oldest of whom is 13 years of age. An inquest was held at the indertaking rooms lust cvening, by a coroner’s jury con- posed of Doc Wright, C. D. Walters and M, Goodwin. The testimony of a number of eye witnesses was taken, among the n being W. J. Cook, Merritt Henary, Johu Bobn, C. . Peterson, W. R._Kemp, Hoory Lander, Georgo Guanella, 5. D. Graves and Georgo S. Davis, The testimony showed that Bright- man was rolled quite a distance by the train, and that the wheels ran over him just before the train stooped. Israel Lovett, the electrician of the motor company, in response to inquiries put to him Dy Doc Wright, who acted as a sort of attor- ney for the dead man, as well as a member of tho jury, stated that he did not think the mun's death could have been caused by an electric shock, although in ruiny weather the motormen, when standing 1 the position Brightman was in when the accident oc- curred, had sometimes received more or less severe shocks, Dr. Green, one of the com pany’s physicians, stated that Brightman’s avm, leg, and ueck were broken, and that his face was very much discolored by congos- tion, which, he thought, was caused by stroke of apoplexy. When Wright cross examined him, however, he admitted that the discoloration might have been caused by the breaking of his ueck as well as by apop- lexy. Most of the questions asked by Wright were intended to draw out facts which would show that the accident had been due to some negligenco or other on the part of the com- pany. The family of the dead man is in very straightened circumstances and it is prob- able that thoy wili bring n suit against the copany for damages. The compauy’s side of the affair was looked after by Attorney A. W. Askwith. All the testimony had not been taken at the hour of adjourzment, and the inquost will be resumed this 10 o'clock.
