Interesting Information Concerning the Christian Ass ciation Hospital The ladies of the Women's Christian Association hospial from time tu time aro asked many questions about the mzaner of conducting this institution, the character of the patients received and a vaviety of other matters pertaining to the work carried on there. These interrogations indicate an inter- est in the hospital, but accompanying them there is manifest sometimes a spirit of criti- cism of and hostility to the enterprise that is unpls ant to meet. However Lhe ladies are glad to answer all inquir “The work is a public one, supported by a great many citizens, and all ave entitled to a Correct knowledge' of how it is done and what becomes of the money and gifts so genorously donated. On Sunday ovening last there was o sacred concert in the saloon of the steamship upon which General Jumes was o passenger, and although the voy- oo had been a tervible one, yet somo 200 of the passengers were e to be prosent at this entertainment. General James presided, and the ent of the evening was a speech made by William Winter, the dramatie critic of the Tri- bune, It was full of charm, humor and pathos; and he recited one of his own poems, an unpublished one. He also told o story of Artemus Ward which is ne He sunid that one evening he and Artemus had bheen attending a thering of litevary friends, and about 3 o'elock in the morning they started down Broadw on their wiy home, When they reached the old Jones house, now demolished, Artemus insisted upon entering. They found a_ solitary night clerk there, who was Jdy “able to awaike sufliciently to receive thom, Ward suid: *Is this the Jones house and he said it very solemnly, and when the clerk informed him that it was, Ward, straightening himself up und assuming a munner of grave importance and mystery, said. SRirst of all T want a bottle of gin an it be negotiated fo The elerk produced it,and then Ward, still maintaining his mauner of heavy mystery, said to the cler “1s the proprictor in?” Yes, he was in, but abed. It is very important that [ see him,” continued Ward; *in foct, of the utmost importance, So the clerk went out to arouse the proprietor, who some ten minutes later came down in his nightshirt, pair of trousers, and slippers over his stock- | ingless feot. Ward seized him impr sivoly by the hand, and then, with the manner of great n led the aston- | ished Jones to u e und, bending to his ear, said in tones which wonld have | done Edwin Forrest credit: **Siv, 1 ha culled to impress upon you the sublime and awful fact that eternal vigilance 1s the price of liberty. Let these words sink deep into your heart, sir,” Jones seomed overcome with astonish- ment so that he was not ungry, and then Winter and Ward walked out of the hotel arm in arm.
