ONE DEAD BODY REMOVED. Others Supposed to Be Still Under the De- bris—A Scene of Great Contusion—The Most Disastrous Accident That Has Occurred in ‘This City in Years, The most horrible occurrence in connection with the great storm that swept across this city @ little after noon today was the falling of the walls of the new Metzerott Music Hall that was in course of construction. From the debris and wreck one dead body has already been taken. Another one is known to be still under the ruins and two young women have been taken ont, both badly burt. How they ever escaped death among the flying stones and timbers is one of those mysteries that can never be solved. THE FIRST RODT REMOVED. The dead body that was removed from the pile at 2 o'clock this afternoon was that of George White, the well-known _ tailor, who had a shop at 1112 F street. In the rear of this store and facing upon a narrow alley that separated the line of F street stores from the north wall of the Metzerott Hall was a small work room and in this wero Mr. White and three sewing women. When the storm broke it became un- usually dark in their room, as it did everywhere else, but beyond this there was nothing to lead them to fear imminent danger. A SUDDEN HORRIBLE cRasi A few minutes after 12:30 o'clock there came a sudden horrible crash and the great eighty- foot wall on the north side of the music ball toppled over upon the smaller buildings that face on F street. Under tons of brick, mortar, beams, iron girders and woodwork lay the four people. When the first of the army of res- cuers reached the scene and learned that several people had been covered up no one bad the slightest’ iden that any could ever come forth alive. Yet two did come forth, and with apparently but slight in- juries. ‘The streets of the city were practically de- serted at the time of the accident and the first intimation tlet the public had that there was any immediate result of the great storm was when the fire alarm was rung and the engines and hook and ladders and patrol wagons went tear- ing up toward the corner of 12th and F streets. FOLICE AND FIREMEN OX HAND. As soon as the crowd began to surge up around the corner a large force of police, un- der the command of Lieut. Amiss of the first precinct, went to work to keep the crowd away from the wreck. Chief Parris was also promptly on hand with his force and they started in like heroes to clear away the wreck and prevent any danger of fire. It was a reproduction on a smaller scale of the Park Place disaster in New York last summer. The task that confronted them was « hercu- Jean one. All the back buildings of the F street stores from Metzerott’s to 12th street were buried beneath the walis of the fallen building. More than a half dozen buildings were more or less wrecked. The only way to reach the worst of the trouble was through the fronts of the stores that face on F street, or across the great sea of tangled beams and girders that are where the auditorium of the music hall was to have —_ been. The rear of the two stores 1110 and 1112 F street were found to be in the worst plight. ‘The first of these was occupied by George White, the tailor, the second by A. Gude & Bro., the florists. The partitions between the two stores in the rear were demolished. Inside all was wreck and ruin and the fronts of both buildings were completely blown out by the concussion of air from the rear. FOUR PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING. At first it was not thought that any one was buried beneath the wreck, but as soon as neighbors began to come in the firemen and policemen, who were work- ing like Trojans removing the debris, learned that when the walls fell at least four people were in the shop in the rear of White's store. There had been no warning of impend- ing disaster; the people bad not left the room; ‘they must still be in the ruins. With renewed efforts they attacked the work before them, and after » few minutes’ well-directed labors with books and crowbars they brought to light « young woman, one of the sewing girls. She was near the front and was soon taken out into the open air. She was not seriously hurt. Her name she gave as Clara Greenberg of $2 Lotreet. She did not speak English very well, but through the assistance of Dr. Marmion, who was among the first on the scene, she man- ‘aged to say that the “boss and two girls were still inside.” She was then taken to @ police ambulance that was standing outside and removed to the Emergency Hospital, where medical sid was rendered. The finding of the one did not delay the work TRAFFIC PARALYZED. Inability to Market the Immense Wheat Crop. BELGIUM WORKMEN WANT SUFFRAGE. English Conservatives Meet to Discuss Plans. Cacao, Nov. 23.—A special dispatch from Minneapolis, Minn,. exys One curious lect of the big wheat blockade bas been the almost complete paralysis of all traffic from Duiuth and Superior to the twin cities. Itbas already caused a great famine in soft coal and dealers have been flying around at a lively rate in a vain attempt to make connections The milis are t greatest sufferers, because they have almost no «1 now their coal supply has run so it = feared that several of them will have to shutdown for ten days or two weeks. There ts. of course, plenty of coalat the bead of Lake Superior, but ix no way of get- ting it here. Hundreds of cars of coal are sidetracked waiting for the switch engines to get the wheat out of the way. Both the St Paul and Duluth and Minnesots are Working all the ton they can get to prevent wheat trains from blockading. One Minneapolis firm i 1,900 cars behind on its orders, It is also learned that there is chance for help from the east, as Chicago is taking all the Illinois coal and the strike in Indiana cute off the sup- ply from that locality. Soft coal will rise from 25 to 50 cents ton this week, and «mall con- sumers will probably be forced to aut up shop at that. > UNIVERSAL SUPrRAG! wantep, ¢ Belgian Laborers Claim Th: They Have Been Fooled by Promises. Buvseris, Nov. 23.—A meeting was held at Seraing yesterday that promises to result in serious disturbance in the Leigian labor world. It will be recalled that the great strike of Belgian workmen, which was general through- out the country some months ago, was not for higher wages nor shorter hours, but for the estabishment of universal suffrage in Belgium. ‘Ihe government at that me made many promises, but time has passed and the workingmen fiud themselves no nearer the qos their hopes than they were at the beginning of the struggle. Relying upon the promises of the ministers, the strikes were ended and order was restored in the many fields of Belgian Iabor. The workingmen tinally became discontented with the situation of affairs and yesterday's meeting at Beraing was the result. The gates of the varions labor organizations repre- tented at the meeting decided that unless the promises of the government to grant universal suffrage were shortly fultilled they would re- consider their action in bringing the former strife to a close and would again inaugurate w meral strike to force the granting of their mand. Al present the only persons allowed to vote in Belgium are those who pay taxes to the amount of 40 francs « year. Lhis qualification places the voters at 21.53 in every 1,000 of the Population, and it is this unequal state of affairs that the workingmen wish to do away with. sie ENGLISH CONSERVATIVES CONFER. ‘The, Program of the Party Discussed im Convention at Birminghaw. During the past four years owners and Interested have. been’ doing come good’ week prospecting and developing and are satisfied they have a good thing. Besides sup- plying the local demand, measures are on foot to piace this coal inalarge way on the San Francisco market next year. ‘The coal veins lie one above the other about thirty feet apart, uu from four to six workable veins of five or six feet from the roof to floor. These veins can be traced for a distance of two miles. the A tramway has been built com ith a $50-ton coal bunker at tidewater. tunnel Two wharves aud dwelling houses have been erected aud there is considerable rolling stock on the ground.
