Notorious California Convict Dies tn State's ¥ SAN Rarmaer, Cal, Nov. 2.—Charles Schmidt, a confederate of the notorious iduey Bell, was found dead in his coll at tho San Quinten prison yesterday. Schmidt was brought to the prison Saturday. Just before beiug photographed ho placed a piece of folded paper in his mouth and then took a drink. Tt is now believed the paper con- tained morphine. Ho was then locked up in a cell and became unconscious. His coll- mates called the attontion of Captain Me- Lean to Schmid’s coudition, but ho paid no attention to them. They heard Schmidt moaning during tho night, but could do noth- ing for hun. In the morning ho was doad. A coroner’s jury met today, but adjourned to await an analysis of the stomach. The criue for which Schinidt was {mpris- oned was'a mysterious one. Over a yoar ago Samuel Jacobson, who was shot late at night and killed, vefore he died claimea ho was attacked by two highwaymen. Jacobson's story was disbelieved, and a number of sen- sational accounts have been published, all agreeing that ne was shot inside his house either by a member of his family or by a man who was visiting one of his femalo rela- tives. After a while three men wore ar- rested—Siduey Bell, Edward Campbell and Cnarles Schaiidt. It was abundantly proved thatall had been holding up belated pades- trians in the city, and the first two agreed weli with Jacobson’s description of his mur: AlisNeb: 7 derers, Campbell finally turned state’s ev = dence and confassed that ho and Bell had held up Jacobson, who resisted and was shot by Bell.
