New Yonrk, Oct. 17.—It is a remarkable fact, savs a morning paper, that tho arbi- trary discharge of half a dozen truckmen in the Philadelphia branch of the great Adams Express company, earniug, perhaps, not more than from 12 to §18 a weels, was the means of overthrowing in disgrace John Hoey, who was, until his dismissal Jast Wednesday, president of the company, receiving 0,000 a year. These are the facts of the case, cov- tinues the story: Mr. John H. Rigney, the trusted agent of the Adams Express company in Philadel- phia and its district branches of Delaware and Maryland, has been in the service of the compaoy for the past thirty years. He has been intimately asso- clated with the growth ana devclopment of the business, During the war Mr, Rigney was in charge of the express cowpany’s de- liverics on the battle fields, and represented the company with great skill as carrier and transport agent fov the Union army. He has been a_lifelong friend of the present presi- dent, Mr. Sanford, and was associated in intimate business 'relations with tho late president, William Dinsmore, Mr. Lovejoy and Mr. Waldo Adams. For some years past John Hoey had been aware that Mr. Rigney and the Philadelphia branch were not in accord with his schemes, Hoey was determined to strike adeadly blow at Riguey, but was afraid of tho Philadel- phiuw’s influence over all scrvants of the great Philadelphia branch, second only to the central oflice in the amount of business it handled. And Mr. Rigney was so thoroughly master of the great business he had himself built up and fostered, and was such a general favorite with the directors, em- ployes and with the leading business ana railvoad men of the Quaker city that Mr. Hoey with almost absolute power as presi dent, still feared him. He was probably also aware that Mr. Rigney was cognizant of many, if not all, of his inner dealings during his management. While Mv. Rigney was on a vacation in September, 1800, Mr. Hoey unwarrantably number of Mr. Rigney’s trusted employes, men who had been fifteen and twenty yeurs in the business, Economy wus the motive aud reasou given by President Hoey. The force, hie said, had to be reduced 1 dull times, On Mr. Rigney’s return on Octobor 2 he found his force at sixes and sevens, the work hampered, errors of daily oceurrence, and all because Mr. Hoey hail removed his best men and put in their places men gnorant of the busi- ness. Mr. Hoey vidiculed and belittled Rigney's warnings and took every opportunity to suub nim. Mr. Rignoy determied to fight and vindi cate his position, although he said he knew ho would be defeated. His comolaints to the directors met with no recoguition. They r fused to interferc of course, and the unequal tight ended in the resignation of Mr. Rigacy in January of this year. But the contro- versy had opened the eyes of the directors, and the disclosures and impeachments of Mr. Rignev were the death kuell of John Hoey's powe Itis well known that Mr. Rigney s knowl- edge of the inner dealings of Messrs, Hoey and Spooner wilt, as testimony it is thought, lead 10 some of the most sensational develop: Ients yet to bo brought out in this important case. 1t will not be any watterof surprise in Philadeiphio 1f Jonn H. The summary dismissal by Mr. Hoey of wen under Mr. RRigney 1s said to have been the direct causo of Mv. Rigney’s fght against Hoey.
