Hazelton, chaivman of the republican county central committee, hus just returned from & visit to Avoea and tells a story on tho democ candidate for sheriff which 1s causing considerable amusement amoug tho people of Avoca ut present. For tho past ten days the district court hus been occupied with the trial of a numoer of suloon injunction cases. During the progress of the trial it became necessury to prove the ownership of the bu liscussion, and in some way Hazen learned that he was 10 be called upon by the prosecution to tes- tify. He at once loft the court room, where ho had been listening to the trial, and went to a grocery store not. far. An oficer of the court fol but just as he en- tered the front door tuzen saw him and went out at the back. A lively chase ensued, but Hazen managed to get away from his les swift footed pursuer. The officer immndi ately returned to the court houso and had a subpoena issuea for the would-be sheriff, and later in the afternoon he attempted to serve it on Huzen, whom Le found in a sa- loon. While he was reading the back door suddenly came iato play again, and when the officer looked up ' Hazen bad disappeared. He was not se for a week, but returned to s home within an hour after the adjournment of court on Saturday afternoon. Yesterday the court beld another short session and Hazen im- proved the opportunity of coming to Council Bluffs. He spent the day i looking over the ground and getling acquuinted with the voters, A BEk roporter saw him on the stroet and asied him what the chauces were for the success of the democrats. “AVell,” was tho reply, “things are looking very well just at present. William Hansen, who bought out the saloon formerly kept, by Belgum, was moving into his quarters at the time thetrouble occurred, and Sullivan was working for him, He said that Sullivan offered to set up the drinks to the crowd, but Belgum learnod that he had only 15 cents, and refused to give them the Jigior, Sullivan insisted, and a quarrel en- sued, in the course of which be saw Sullivan strike Belgum, Dora Jacobson, a whose remarks had to v jury by an interpreter, testified that she saw Sullivan strike Beigi and knock him over, She knew uothing of Sullivan's having been kicked until she saw him taken to the hospi- tal. Dr, I, I Seyoert, oneof the physicians who made the post mortem examination, de- seribed the condition in which the body was found after death substantially as given in vesterduy's Beg, e said a blow could have caused death sooner than in the present case, but he was positive the aeath had been the result of a blow of some kind Dr. Donald Macrae, jr., told what he_knew of the case from the time ho first took hold of it, which was immediately after the injury was first -complained of. In his opinion death was undoubtedly caused by an injury of some kind, though what the exact n ro of the injury was he could not say positively The abscess which was found by the doc might have been started without any inju whatever, but he was satisfied that was not the case. ' There are still some witnesses that could novbo found yesterday, and the con- clusion of the 1nquest was postponed until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, I left the city accompanied by his wife the day after the fight in his saloon. o some of his his acquaintances he said he was bound for Chicao and to others Wisconsin.
