Recent Disasters ou the American and British Coaste. New Yorx, Oct. 14.—The fearful storm which raged in this vicinity since Sunday has wrought immense damage along the Long Island coast. At Rockaway waves nearly thirty feet high are lashing the beach, plowing far into the sand and washing buildings and boats out to sca. Many pleasure crafts have been missing since Sunday and it is feared that they have been lost with all or. boa: White, Alfred Kane, Mark Thureb; Little of New York hired two boats Sunday for a day's fishing. ‘They have not siuce been ween, but one of the boats has been picked up and there is hardly a doubt that all four men have been drowned. SIXTREN MEN Rost. At Holland's Station on Rockaway Beach, seven boats were iet out on Sanday. They car- ried sixteen men. None of them have since been seen, and it is thought the storm carried them out tosea. As the water outside the in- let raged mountains high, so that a small boat could scarcely live a minute in it, the eixteen men were probably drowned. A two-masted schooner, sailed by James Moore and having a crew of three men, put out from Canaries Sunday afternoon. She was loaded with coal and bound for Baltimore. She was caught in the storm and the three sailors were swept off the deck while trying to make sail Moore clung to a mast and was saved, but only after drifting around for over twenty-four hours, and then at the loss of Julius Quay, alife saver, who went out to the vessel ina breeches buoy and w drowned. Moore was finally rescued. He is believed to be insane from his awfal experi- ence, as he talks iz an incoherent way and con- stantly begs to be taken back to the boat. ON THE BRITISH COASTS. Lonpox, Oct. 14.—The furious gale which has been raging over all England, Ireland and ihe south of Scotland for over twenty-four hours, and which bas already caused a vast amount of damage about the seaside towns and wrecked a large number of vessels, continues today in all its intensity. 1% THE cries. In the cities and large towns proud of the possession of one or more parks a great amount of damage has been done. Trees have been blown down or mutilated on all sides in these people's pleasure grounds, plants and shrubs have been scattered literally to the winds and flower beds have been crushed nearly out of existence by the fury of the storm. Chimneys and tiles were carried everywhere from the roofs of private dwellings, outhouses of wood crashed down as if built of cards. Pe- destrianism was, during the height of the storm, utterly impossible and the trafic by railroad or water was almost brought to a com- plete standstill. At Folkstone, one of the great landing places for the transchannei steamers, throughout the night the sea swept the great pier with iminense waves, carrying» away all the lighter portions of the structure and threatening to wrench away its most powerful supports. The light house at its extremity was deluged by the angry waters, and it was even feared that 1t might be swept from its founda- tions. The channel passenger bouts were un- able to cross last night, and to those who kn the weather these vessels venture out in this gives some idea of the severity of the storm which prevailed. ‘Today the storm is raging very heavily and is still doing much damage. At Helensburg, a watering place on the Firth of Clyde, at the en- trance of the Gareloch, near Dumbarton, Scot- land, the fishing and other boats which had been drawn upon the beach at the first a proach of the gale were carried along by furious waves, Which poured into the streets, flooding the houses and driving the inmates from their homes, many escaping through the windows, so little ‘warning was given of the inundation. A terrific gale arose at Brighton yesterday afternoon, blowing down most ot the structures in the course of erection for Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and wrecking them utterly.
