MANY CANDIDATES TOR EVERY OFFICE, Today Wil Witness a Struggle Among the Unterrified Hosts Which May Split the Party. The democrats of Pottawattamie county will hold their convention today. The dis- sensions which arose in the rank and file of the party last Tuesday evening have been steadily growing evers since, until a genuine war seems likely to break out. W. H. Knep- her, who is looking with longing eyes at the treasurership, is going to make trouble if the statements of some of the old democratic war horses are to be believed. The delega- tion which was elected the other night from the Second ward at the city bullding is said to be unanimously in his favor, and Knepher is quoted as saying that if he doesn't have twolve votes from that ward alone he won't %o into the convention at all, The delegation which was sclected by the dissatistied demo- crats i tho same ward is going to make a frantic struggle for recognition from the con- vention, and Knepher is also quoted as say- ing that if tho convention recognizes the up- starts at tho exponse of his regulars, ho has a lot of good friends who will pull their knives out of their pockets and o in for gore, metaphorically speaking. The prospects for war are accordingly very flattering. ‘' contest for sheriff'is a badly mixed up affair, and time alone can tell how it will bo unraveled, Three candidates are mentioned protainently from outside the city, viz: A. 12, Hooker of Avoca, J. T. Hazen' and J, P. Stubr of Minden. Hooker is O'Neill's dep- uty at Avoca. and he consequently has some- thing of an udvantage in the way of experi- ence. He is said to have spiked fully half of the delegates outside of the city, while neither of the others have more than half a dozen or 5o that they can be suro of. Charley Walters of this city is doing consiacrable wire-pulling of a more or less quiet nature, but thero are a number of delegates from Council Bluffs who say they will vote for a republican sheriff in preference to'him, A democrat who has the reputation of keep- ing thoroughly abreast of tho times it polit- ical mutters, furnished the following infor- wation to a BEk reporter yesterday in regard ro the candidates whoso names wil be brought before the party for nomination to the various offices: Wiiliam Gronweg has a monopoly ou all senatorial uspirations that are to bé found in_the democratic party far as is known. The candidates for the leg- islature are more numerous. \. H. Ware, R. W. Briges, A. W. Wyman, J. W. Hem- sted, J. B. Johannsen ana S, . Underwood have covetous eyes on the office, and even Lu- cius Wells is said to bo willing to exchange the business of selling self-binders for that of making laws. Those who have siguified their willingness to accept the nomination of sneriff are C. D. Walters, Lars Jensen, A, R. Hooker, Jobn P, Stubr, John T. Hazen and George C. Wise. Several weeks ago Chief of Police Cary was known to have an eye on the oftice, but recently his remarks have been few and made only to his iutimate friends. The same domosrat states that Mr. Cary 15 holding up his lightning rod and praying as hard as be knows how that it may be struck. For county treasurer the following are in the fleld: W. D, Hardin, J. B. Matthews, Brooks Read, Knepher, 'A.'T. Rice, F. W. Spetman and John Plumer. There are bub two candidates for county superintendent of schools, O. H. Marsh and J. K. Cooper. Dr. J. C. Waterman is the only oue who wants the office of coroner. Kor county surveyor Judson and F. Stimson are the candi- T'wo members of the Board of Super- €0 out this fall, Alexander Osler Charles Alexander. The latter is a candidate for re-clection, and with him are J. R. Wilmot, John Williams, J. R. Black ard D, A. Cole. Of all this amount of democratic talent a good share must be disappointed. Republicans aro taking advantage of this fact, and are making a canvass of the situation with a view to making_something moro between now and next Saturday, when the republi- can primaries are to be held. The squabble in the democratic ranks have convinced the republican leaders that now is their chance toslide iu and win some of the plums them- selves, visors and The Latest Conundram. Attorney General Stone finished his brief yesterday in the famous case of the United States ngainst the Des Moines River Naviga- tion company, which has been in the supreme court for the last twenty-five years, It is massive dccument of about 120 type written pages, and tells the story of the case at con- siderable length, About 110,000 acres of land were given by the United States government to the state of lowa on condition that the state should make certain jm- provements along the Des Moines river. The state turned over the lana _to a com- pany known as the Des Moines River Navi- gation company with the same conditions. The company took the land and sold it, but neglected to muke the required improve- ments, From that time to this the govern- ment has been trying to oust the settiers who claim the land by right of deed from the state. The case will come up for final hear- ing on the third Monday in October before the supreme coart at Washington. Tho land in question is now valued at £4,000,000, and the case is consequentiy of great importance. Information Freo.
