Beautiful Little City in the Lovely Valley of the Nemuha. SKETCH OF THE TOWN AND ITS CITIZENS. All the Attributes of a Motropolis Push and Enterprise of the People—Men Who Make Their Homes There. Falls City, the county seat of Richardson county, is one of the oldest and most inter: esting towns in the state, having been laid out as long back as the spring of 1856, Gon- eral Jim Lane being tho founder of the place. Richardson county is one of the southern tlor of counties, and is provably one of the wealthiost in the stato, For agriculture and fruit growing it 18 unsurpassed, and just now in the midst of this most beautiful seuson its boautiful farms, with their broad acres of waving corn, and the golden stubble of the lesser grains, bending orchards, exuberant vegetation and silvery water courses, it pre sents a most entrancing and picturasque panorama. The crops this season, both In grain and fruits, wil, with no unforscen backset, bo almost incredible in quantity and unprecedented in quality, and as ono old far- mer remarked to the correspondent, “should oo instiumental in lifting every mortgago in the county.”” As arulo, however, the far mers of Richardson county are stranger to the incubus of poverty and debt. As a class they are excoptionally well off, with cash on hand to spare, the fruits of tho indomitable pluck, the intelligence and unitiring industry, which has distinguished their iabors i moulding these rieh acres intv Elysian fields of beauty, peace aad plenty. “he principal stream traversing son is tho (ireat Nemana, tho nortb fork of which enters near the nottheast corner. At Salom the north and south forks unite in the main body, which augmenting coutinually from the 'smaller tributary streams, de- pouchies finlly into the Missouri near tho Kansas line. = Following the Great Nemaha in importance is tho Muddy, which crosses the northern boundary a_little west of the city and joins the Nemaha possibly twelve miles from its mouth. Bosides theso thero are six or seven othier smaller streams, Falls City is a protty little place with population of somethini over 3,000 souls and situato upon a considerable elovation about a mile north of tue Great Nemaba, a long stretch of whose luxuriant valley' it ovel looks, with its shimmering fields of grain and gracoful clumps of walnut, maplo and olm. The town gets its name from a small falls or cascade up the river some several miles and is in keeping gencrally with its poetical christening. It is a typical western town, with ail tho auxiliaries of an eastern city five times 1ts dimensions—water works, electric light and telephone plauts on the line of both the Missouri Pa- cific and B. & M. railways, enargetic, go-ahead and metropolitan. There are five churches, the Methodist, Fresbyterian, Catholic.' Episcopal and Christian, all with handsome eaifices of their own and largo congregations; the public schools occupy threo buildings - different sections of the town, and glory in a high standard of educa- tional advancément. In additiou to these new Catholic school or convent will be openod at the old residence of Judge Dundy on the 3istof this month, under tho guidance of four istors, ‘They have six acres hero all im- proved and ornamented with lawns, trees and tlowers, and the convent will be an institution in which the little city will take much pride. Thero ure throo weekly newspapers, tho Jourral, republican, with Colonel Edwecomb as editor, the Nows, democratic, Clay Davis, cditor, and the now alliance’ organ, tho Plebeian, Jule Shoenheit, editor, allof which are in a flourishing condition, and conducted on a high plane of journalistic enterprise. There are two banks, cach one with asu plus on hand which they find dificult to utilize. Such is the fiattering conaition of the thrifty denizens of Falls City aud its cuvironiug farming districts. These banks are the First National with a capital and surplus of $100,000, tho following roster of officials: President, S, B. Miles, the wealthicst manin the county | vice president, John W. Holt; cashier, J. H. Miles, The Kichardson County bank, ¢ and surplus from 50,000 to $100,000 dent, J. 8. Slocum; vice president, Schuck; cashier, G. W. Holland, and tant casiier, B. W. Metz. The cashier, Mr. Holland, is one of those gentlemen whom it is always n pleasure to meer. In addition to the features enumerated Falls City, of course ombraces its full quantity of mercantilo houses of all grades and kinds, and just now, in anticipation of the inpouring wealth of the golden autumn time, they are immersed in the liveliest sort of & trade. Traveling men consider Falls City one of the very thriftiest poiuts in the state, and the hotels ‘are nevar free from guests of this character. The Uhion house, Frank Marvin, vropractor, is 4 modei ' hostelrie, and com: pares favorably with the best houses in the state. ‘The’industrial establishments of Lails City are entitled to extendea notice. “The Falls City creamery is an_enterprise in which the enfire commiluity takes an espo cial interost. 1t is owned aad conducted by the Strong Brothers of New York eity, with Mr. George Strong, & true Gothamite, in the superintendency. The Strongs em- ploy thirty hands the year round, and almost the whole of their manufacture i3 shipped to New York, where it takes rank with tho highest, selling at the same figuros as tho famous Elgin butter. The Strongs use noth- ing but tho purest cream. When this reaches tho creamery it goes into a receiving tank; from this it is pumped intoa storage vat, whera it is ‘“‘cured,” then it is ready for tho urn, and 18 sent through a pive wnto tho churning department, where the squaro Blanchard churns, with & capucity of several | hundred pounds’ of butter at a time, arocoustantly at work. Then the butter is | taken from the ehurn to the working room, whero the steam power worker is vevolving. | This is an interesting and sight, A ronnd table, six feet in dinmeter revolving undor a corrugated couical roller, also con- stantly turning, while betweon the roller and the table is an inch of butter, Over tho | worker is a reservoir of ice and salt to_cool the bulk of butter on the taole, in which a sialled mechanic is_constantly at_work with a paddle who sees that overy particle of brino and buttermilk is pressed out. He is o thoroughgoing busiuess map, & staunch republican, and n whilom friend ‘and pmpanion of Ned Buntlino and Buffalo Bill. Colonel Hinton is a man to whom Falls City owos a debt that will bo hard to liguidate, as he hus given them one of the choicest, most romantic, poetical and beautiful summer resorts to bo found in tho whole L west. Surely Nebraska boastsof noth- ing that can touch it. Colonel Hinton, with Lis estimablo botter alf and_fanily, rosides in a cosy old fashionod country houso, bed upon o blufl one mile south of the om its vine-ombowered porch an en- chanting view of the lovely Nemeha valloy, with its shimmering reuches of the river, tho umbrageous groves, goldon flolds, gracoful pasture lauds, aud the spires of tho distant city. Butmore than all this. a complete lookout over tho largest artificiul lawo in the country, and as picturesque a littlo park as i oyes ever rested upon—a monument indomitavlo pluck, his matehiloss ingenuity and untiving eneriy One year ago last Juno Colonel Hinton conceived the idea of constructing an_ artifi- cial lake that would furnish a summer pleas- uro resort for not only the eitizons of Falls City, but for as many for miles and miles around, who folt nclined to take advantago of it. 'At the base of tho bluff stretching away to the west was a rare bit of pasture land embracing thirtoon acros, and this he fixed upon for tho bed of the lake, and went to work with @ will that guarantéed naught but success. Tho people, save a few noar spirits, tooked upon the projoct us tho freni of a lunatics, but in less than two months all the grading had been practically comploted, and in thirty days thercafter, hocus pe presto change, 1nstead of @ grassy meadow land. there lay a beautiful lake, with its bluo® waters kissing back tho rays of tho summer sun, and dancing and elistoning in_ radiant light! Today it s indcod a_rare spot, having bocn improved ana beautifiod within' the past six monthis by tho master wind and mustor kand that built it. There it nestles, like a pro- clous gom among _ its surround- ings, on ono side the gay tinted baldrick of saumach, sunflower and golaen rod, on the other by i park of shady walnuts, towering elms and delicate maples, with the playful breeze brushing its emerald surfaca \mmering ripples and the swallows rring down its contor, One gazes enrapt to devour the beautcous picture, skotched, it luke is filled with water by a single coutvifugal pump of a capacity of 2 gallons per minute, from the Nemaha river, 560 feet awuy and at a riso of twenty-four feet. The full capacity of this puup, however, bas never been required, and a volume of 1,600 gallons per minute is tho flow employed to counteract the daily losses by scopago, absorption and wevaporation. Adjoining the lake on the wost, with the tor- tuous and gushing and guvgling Nemaha bounding it on three sides, is a park of some sixty ucres of uative bluck walnut trecs, with o sward of bluo . grass as rleh as a Moguet carpet, and provided with drives and walks, ' rustio seats and lounging places, a paradiso for tho picnicker and merrymaker iu this the golden season of tho umversal idyll.
