O. Mead, the plumber who was so fright- fully burned by an explosion ot a gasoline ce in the Council Bluffs pldmbing com- s estublishment two weeks ago, cansed pretty nearly a sensation among his fellow workmeu and wequrintances. When it was seen that he was without a scar or mark and was as smiling as ever and ready to go work the wonder partook somewhat of a su- perstitious nature, and the boys eyed the vie tim of the treacherous gasolitie, whom they SuPPOSC o still hovering between life und death, with a chilly, uncanny feeling, Tho natnre of Mead's injiries can only be ted by a physiciau, and the medical who examined nim a few hours after the accidont could give his friends but hittle en- couragoment to hone for his recovecy. They reasoned according 1o the ola rule that whero one-thind of the surface of the body is burned medical science is belpless and death is the almost inevitable resuit of the few duys of norrible tovture that follow. The furnice that exploded was the kind usually used by plumbers, holding about o galion of tho tuid. Mead had Just finished filling it und bud pumped in the necessary air pressure. The explosion followed the first touch of the mateh, and the unfortunate man was envel oped in u blaze that filled the little room where ho was working, Ho was dressed only in light summer clothes made of i goods, Large quuntities of the blazing fluid were thrown upon his back, fulling in a shower as ho wus bending over the furnace. The thin cloth was instantly burned away und he was burned from his “aukles to the bacis of his neck, over more than one-halt of the surfuce of the body. Wheu hio was taken from tho blazing building he was carried into tho rear entrance of A. D. Foster's drug store, and within three minutes from the tme of the accident was enveloped from head 1o foot in sheets of hint covered hulf un_inch think with Foster's Mecca com pourd, a simple prepuration that the pnysicians and many oitizens of Council Bluffs know has been 1ha savior of life in many other cases of severe burning that would have been fatal under the usual treatment. No other remedy was used, and after the tirst sting of the burns wus over, the un- fortunute man suffered little or no paio. Not a blister appeared on the burned surface, and consequently not & scar or mark is left u rks, who wus near and assiste getting Mead the building, was ulso severely burned about the bands. Thick pouiticas of tue Mecca were put on aud by the middle by in from to | of the afternoon there was not even redness to show where blistors w formed with the best reme: used. These gentiemen and catnot spe of Mr. ple prapar he above case is only one of many where rompt application of Mr. Foster's Mecca compound has rot only prevented fatal ter mination to dreadful burns but has i the anguish almost instantly and carried th sufferers through without leaving a scar or visible mark. I'hs Mecea is not a patented article, but 1s & simple pre paration with the formula for the use of the physician. There no question that if it is applied at once a majority of the cases of severe burning which terminate fatally would be saved. This can only be done of course where it is kept in_the hou 1y for instant use. If Mr. Foster were disposed to ao 8o he could publish more genuine testimonials than any of the much vaunted patent medicines, but heis a modes conscientious Christian gentleman, very re luctant to resort to any hod of adverti ing, but still anxious to do all he can toward saving lifo and preventing suffering. But without advertising or any effort made to push it the Mecea is making its way. Yes terday orders aggregating nearly six gross were received i Colorado where a few packages had found their way. Fighting Over Crops. A special session of the district court held yesterday with Judge W. I Smith on the beneh. The object of the session was to hear the case of Peter Wiese, John Clausen and H.
