THE OMAHA DAILY BEE SATURDAY JULY 4 8Ol-TWELVE PAGES, T0 THE OMAHA MANCHESTER, Rapid Transit Between tte City and Enst Omaha Becured, HOW TO REACH THE FACTORY DISTRIOT. Trial of the New Line and Its Fo mal Opening to Trafic— Who Watched the Motor Mote. At 10:30 o'clock yesterday a little party gathered at the corner of Sherman avenue and Locust street to witness the opening of the new motor line to Kast Omaba. forming the party were Mayor C Superintendents Smith and Tucker of the Omaha street railway company; John R Webster, manager of the East Omaha motor line; A. B. DeLong, assistant manager of the East Omaba land company ; A. B. Ross, engineer of the company intendent of the new motor line; J rigo, who superintended the construction of the line, J. M. Atkinson of Chicago, repre sentative of tho Westin cctric com pany ; Mr. White, re e of the Edi- son clectric company, und sentatives of the press, Before starting on the initial trip the new rolling stock was subjected to a thorough in spection. The train oconsisted of a closed motor car and an open trailer, built by th St. Louis car company. Both ‘were painted on the same general plan adopted by the Omaba company, yellow being the predomi- nating c , On the signboara of both cars was the uterstate Bridge & Street Railway company.” The motor was provided with wichly upholstered geats, while those of tho trailer were of the slat pattern. The g arrangement of the truck and motors was the principal object of intercst. The wheels wera larger than those ordinarily uscd on strect cars and the motors and connecting machinery were completely enclosed in cast 1ron casings. The casings enclosing the gearing are kept about half full of g luces the “‘bumming” ton minimum, The motors are of tho Westing- house pattern and are of twenty hors power. When the equipment had been thoroughly tnspected the gong sounded and the train started noiselessly down the steep grade lending to tho crossing over the railroad rolley wire was hung on a single line of poles placed at one side of the track and was suspended at a height of about eighteen feet from the ground. When the railroad tracks had been cleared the power was turned on and the train sped along the well ballasted track at u rapid rate, A speed of about twenty miles per hout' was soon acquired and maintained until the castern terminus of the road was reached, two and one-quarter miles from Sherman avenue. Ihe track was very smooth, and was laid with 40-pound T rails. Tho grade, after crossing tho railroad tracks, was almost & dead lovel, the embaukment being several feet above'the level of the surrounding land. The steep grade just east of Sherman avenue is an 8,38 percent grade, about tho same as Dodge street, between Seventeenth and Nincteonth strect; When the terminus was reached the party lighted and inspected the barn, a commodious structure, 106353 feet with an addition twelve feet wide runniug along the west side which will be used for an oftice, shop and store room. Workmen wore still engaged in completing the interior arragement of the barn or car house and Mr. J. IR. Webster, who was highly elated over the successful working of everything pertaining to the car line, took pains to impress upon his hearers the fact thut sixty days ago not a singlo article used in the construction or operation of the line had been purchased, The equipment of the road consists of two motors and two trailers, After the road and the appurtenances had been thoroughly inspected und an enter- prising photographer had taken a snap shot at tho distinguished party, a carriage was taken and, under the guidance of Mr. Do Loug, a tour was made of the land of the East Omalia company. “The East Owaha land company have nine factories ou their land, eight of which are in full operation, employing between 300 and 400 people. Three more manufactories have cen secured and will remove to East Omaha fmmediatel Thirty cottages have been erected in_ the vicinity of the factories, twenty-six of which are occupied by people employed in the fa tories. These houses are leased to the occu- auts at prices ranging from § to 17 per month, but are not sold. The sanitary arrangements in_the little settloment are very complete. City water is used exclusively, there being uo wells. Earth closets aro used in every instance and a garbage hauler looks aftor both closets and garbage. Theland in the vicinity of the factories and cottages boro no evideaco of tho ove flow or backflow of the river and a remark was mado that the popular idea concerning East Omaha, was that it was covered with water most of the time, “Why, my dear sir," Cushing, “this land 15 ou a level with, “'tho second story of the Council ~ Blufs postoftice and if this were covered with water where would Council Bluffs bot" The argument was very convincing. At the suggestion of Mr. DeLong, the party drove to the shore of the river imme- diately east of the factories. The shore was aistont about half a mile and when 1t was reached the appearance of the river showed very clearly that the channel was about half a mile from the shore whera the party stood aud Mr. DoLong remarked that at low water the river receded fully that distance leaving exposed a long streten of sandbar which was constantly increasing in width, The hgh water of lust week ieft traces along the bauk, showing that it had come within about Hf- teen feet of overflowing tho banks at that pomt. Asthe stage of the water last week was about nine feet below the high water of 1851 there would seem to be no danger of any overflow. ho party then proceeded to avenue H which 15 1n process of belug paved with granite blocks. This streot starts in the im- mediate vicinity of the district where the factories aro located and extends direotly east o mile-and-a-half where it intersects Eloventh strcet. The roadway is as level ns o floor and is thirty fect in width. Eleventh street is being paved with granite, thus forming an almost absolutely level driveway from the centre of the city to the heart of East Omabia, e R A Mother's Gratitud My son was in an almost helpless condition with flux when 1 commenced using Chamber- Iain's colle, cholora and diarrhoea remedy 1t gave him immediato rehof and [ am sure it savod his life.
