LIVELY SKIRMISH. Carrigg and Schefier Have a Blow Out in a Cigar Store, A fight took place yesterday afternoon in the back room of the Fountain cigar storo between Dan Cavrigg and John Scheflier. It was notexactly according to Marquis of Queensbury rules, and professioual sports wnight not have considered it a first class ex- ample of athletic skill, but at the same time it pleased the spectators und seemed to be bighly interesting to the parties who took the star par efiler was seated at the table in the back roow playing cards with several other men. Carrigg ente , and from the start it wus evident that there was no love lost be- tween them. “I've a notion to smash your jaw,” was the greeting given by Schefller. “Well, iere’s my jaw,” was the reply One_invitation was all that was needed, and Schefer fell to. Several pile driver blows descended on Carrigg's jaw before ho had time to withdraw it from range, and a number fell accidently on his eyes and other parts of his face. Where Carrigg was all this time is not known, but it was evident he was not in it. The proprietor of the store came to the rescuo ut lust, avd notified tue combatants that he did not waut any fightiog there, and the fight ceased. Carrigg left the store’ with both eyes biacked and nearly closed, while the rost of his face was badly bruised and swollen. From all uccounts it is thought the fight was (he result of the raid that was made on the “Ofice” on Wednesday afternoon. A lot of gamblers' tools were confiscated, some of which, it is said, belonged to Schefiler. He gathered a large crowd at the corner of Main strest and Broadway and commonced operations by performing several sleight of hand tricks, After he had swallowed a butcher knifo, dis- plaged the antics of a tame India ribber suike and performed other weird things he got down to business and brought out a little black valise containing a number of brassy looking watches and chains, together with wome jewelry of & more or less golden uppear- ance. After disposing of some of his jewelry at prices that dismayed the rural customers, in some cases even going so far as to give 2 in cash with each dollar's worih purchased, he found he had quite an enthusiasm aroused, and he commenced to sell watches, He of- fered a chain for $10 and promised to throw in one of his imitation gold watches and a dol- lar bill in money. While talking he displayed the bill in a careless way to the audience and allow them to seo that it was not a e, buta tweoty. This was too good an offer to be lost, and he suceceded in- gotting rid of half a dozen watehes in the course of an hour. the purchasers, of course, finding out, when too late, that the man had been sharper than they and had not given them £20 for $10. About this time it became noised abroad that Ovide Vien had gotten & warrant out for the arrest of the fakiron a charge of swindling by sleight of hand tricks. Tn some way or other the fakir himself heard that he was to be made a martyr to his own generos ity, and he lost no time in getting dowa from his' pereh and making tracks for the city lim- its, The warrant had been issued from Jus- tice Sweavingen’s court and placed in the hands of Constable Nicholson, but it was too late, and the fakir got away. Dr. Brooks requires at least eleven more in his favor before the necessary majority will be obtained. Better Showing for April Than Any is Year. Ciieaco, N ‘The Chicago, Burling- ton & Quincy-makes a better showing in its statement of earnings for the month of April than for any previous month this year, This was of course to be expected, but as a matter of fact the improvement is not so marked as haa been anticipated by some of the friends of the Burlington, the greatest achievement being in cutting down operating expenses sufticiently to make the et carnings compare favorably” with those of ayear ago. A de- n gross earnings as compared with the naing period last vear is £257,416, but there is a saving in operating expenses aud fixed churges of 180, which enables the company to show au increase in net carn- ings of 57,00, The revenue from freight traftic fell away to nearly the full amount of the saving in_expenses, but passenger earn- iny's on the other hand saow large and erati- fyiug gains. For the four months ending April 30 there has vcen a decrease in gross carnings of §1,625,000, leaving a acficit in net earnings of #124,750. The Burlington people expect to show large gains in their earnings from this time forward aud are confident that tne results o. the last half of the year will mako up for the loss for the Hrst tew mouths. NO FAITH IN THE REPORT. Although the report is circulated that the West Shore and Canadian Pacific roads have again put into effect the schedule of rates based on $1.07 first class from New York to Paul, no oficial adyice of such a proceed- ing has Deen received here. The story is not credited. The claim of the West Shore, the Canadian Pacific and the Soo line that they were entitled to this differential was recently referred to the presidents of the Trunk Liue association aud they subsequently referrcd it to Chairman Goddard for arbitration. So far as known Mr. Goddard has not given his decision in the case, and western manag- ers are not ready to believe that he would authorize such prohibitive discrimination against the Chicago ronds as a 23-cent_diffor- Ber ential would amount to. Neither do they be- licve that the West Shore would take such action without authority since it agreod to maintain the §1.10 rato until a decision was rendered. Alleged Infringement of Patents, 0., May 25.—Six suits have been riled in tae United States cireuit court by the Cable Railroad association of Chicago against the eople’s railroad company of this city for allezed mfringement of patents.
