Moxtreiien, Vi, May 4. —Frienas of Mrs, Mary Norton, wife of Allison Norton of Ad- dison, are divided in the opinion whother she was dead when placed in gor cofin. Mrs. Norton appareutly died the Sther duy after an fllness of four weeks with the grip. A funeral was held and the body was taken to a private cemetery near Middlebury. Before burial the coffin was opened and the mourn- ors were startlea by what they saw. The bods had turned partly over in the coffin. T'he hands, which bad been crossed on the breast, had moved and one arm bad been raised toward the head. The face had a life- like expression and the whole appearance was of that of one who had partially awakened from a trance. The body was immediately removed to the house of frienas near by and taken frow the cofin. The wise men and women of the neighborhood exchanged opinions on the strange affair and the entire population for wiles around came to look upon the lifelike corpse. The doctors and the undertaker us- serted that the woman was dead. The wise men and women were divided in their views and the neighbors did not know what to muke Of it For three days the body was held while the aiscussion went on Theu somebody suggested that the firing of u cannon would settle whether thewoman was dead or only in & trance. he under. taker went over to Miadlebury and procured an old smoothbore cannon. Tho body was brought out and placed ona couch in the front yard he cannon was fired three times. * All the windows in the house rattied 1 the sheep got a scare from which they e not yet recovered, but the body never 1. Then they buried it. But the Ad- on folks havenot got through talking bout it yet, and some of them still believe that the Woman was in 4 trance. EW YORK, May 25.—When Margaret Mul- haney used to wabble through the east side streets everybody stopped aud stared at her. Margaret was fifty-five years old and weighed 6% pounds. Her busband was dead and she at one time lived with an only daughter. Sheo had a falling ovt with her child and went to live with & cousin at 413 Hamilton stroet. Throe months ago her flesh was accumulat- ing at such a pace that she wes unable to move abou Heart disease set in and on Saturday morning Mrs. Mulhaney died. The undertaker found it impossible to put the huge boay on ice, so it was embalmed. The funeral took j yesterday. A crowd bad gathered in the street expecting serious dif ficulty in getting the body out of the hous and they were not pointed. An or- dinary coffin is 16 inches wide apd 13 high, A plain cloth covered box 1 inches wide and 20 hes high enclosed the corpse. The hall- way being 48 incbes wide the box had to be tpped sideways, while twelve brawny men ned every musele to carry it through the hallway. The lasted tiventy minutes. No hearse was big enough to accommodate the coftfin and an undertaker's wagon carried the body to Calvary cemetery, followed by five carriages of mourpers. A grave is or- divarily dug twenty-four inches wide, Ground had been bought for two graves, giv- ing a width of forty-eight incnes. Seventeen of the cemetery employes lowered the coffin into the double grave. ——— De. Birney cares catarrh, Bee bldg. Lt e In Memory of Martyr Lovejoy. AvroN, I, May 2. — Yesterday was Lovejoy day here. It was here that the great abolitionist leader conducted his campaign against the slave traders. A rickety, tumble- down house marks the place where his news- paper was printed. Here it was that %lijah P. Lovejoy was murdered, making him the first martyr to the cause of slavery in Amwerica. The Lovejoy camp, Sons of Veterans, from St. Louis wus present and with the local Lovejoy club and members of the Uuion Brothers of Friendship marched to the cemetery where the martyr is buried, Each mewber carried flowers which were vlaced on the grave, Rev.
