Verdict Censuring the Medical Insti- tute for Neglectof Richard Melody. Atthe afternoon session of the corouer's inguest to inquire into the death of Richard Melody, Dr. E. W. Lee testified that he had examined in tie operating of the institute and cluimed that was not a fit place to perform auy oper- surgery. He said the room was ly one window, which ¢ which was a e, F\ it ation in small, had apon @ court in atmosphere vaults and patient cc sta ul constantly coming from the was stables in the court yard. The d not help being impregnated ses and germs. The surround- dly had something to do with © death of Richard Melody. In closing the witness stated that £100 would be @ liber fee for such an operation Dr. J. E. Summers, jr., said that the room was not a fit place to perform an operation in surgery. The doctor described the exam- ination to be made before a patient was laid upon the table. This showed negligence c the part of the institute surgeons. Witness said £75 or £100 was liberal compensation for such an operation, in which the patient could have the best advantages and the bestsur- wical skill. Dr. A, F. Jounas, & practicing surgeon, stated that the room was totally unfit for operating purposes, and that there was an absolute absence of clealiness. Dr. Victor Kaufmon stated that the room Was not @ prover place to perform an_oper- ation. That there was & lack of ordinary cleanliness and of everything pertaining to antiseptic Dr. James H. Peabody said that he had practiced for twenty-seven years in Omaba, and that theinstitute operating room was unfit for use principalty on account of dirt. A papered room 1s never fit for an operating room. The sink was bad, and the hygenic surrouadings were bad. " From $3) fo £100 was the usual compensation for an amputa- tion. Dr. L. P. McKenna reviewed the condi- tions of the room and steted that §100 was a lieral fee for such work. Dr. Chbarles Rosewater said that his impression was that it was a neglected room and was surprised that it was used for surgi- cal operations, He never saw & bospital in such a dirty condition before. Witness de- scribed the operation and what should nave been the examination before the plaintitf was placed under the kuife. A man who does not make such an examination would not te ful filling his duties as a surgeon, Detective Dempsey testitied to the conver- sation between Coroner Harrizun and Dr. Williams and President A McLaughlin upon his first visit to the institute when the effects of Richard Melody were demanded. Witness statea that McLaugnlin and Will- iams told contradictory stories about the de- ceased und his efTects. Dr. F. D. Couiter stated that he made the postmortem examination upon the body of Richard Melody. There were no external marks of violence upon the body. An ex- perimental operazion had been performed upon the eyes of the dead man at the time or just after his aeath. The wound was not in the proper antiseptic condition, and that a spot of gangrene was found in the flap. No antisentic dressings had been used. The pleural cavities contained considerable watery-serous fluid, red in color. The lungs were badly congested and an evidence of oronchitis.” There was fatty dezeneration of the heart, and the liver was lighter in_color and larger than the normal size. The kidneys showed evidence of Bright's disease, and the spleen was also degenerated. The doctor stated that the mau should never have been given an anmsthetic or placed upon au oper- ating table. The witness' testimony snowea thut the proper preliminary examination had not been given the patient. 1t would bea very risky matter to operate upon such a man, even by the most experienced sur- geo! Lr. Gapen, commissioner of bealth, stated that he had examined the building from a sanitary standpoint and declared that the sanitary conditions of the building and oper- ating room bad. He stated that the building was not fit for a bospital or for s surgical operation o kind. "Dr. Gapeu considered £50 or $100 & good fee for such work. Dr. Sioclair of the Institute was recalled and denjed that he had performed the expe- rimental operation upon the eyes of the dead man. Dr. Sinclair was then questioned upon his kuowledge of surgery. ~Some questions he failed to answer at all and some he be- came badly mixed upon. After two hours’ debate the jury returned a verdict scoring the medical institute and censuring the faculty for carelessness aud negiect. The verdict also calls for an inves- tigation of the institute by the authorities. - Gessler's Magic Headacne Wafers, Cures all beadeches in 20 minutes.
