Webber was brought before Commissioner Hunter yesterday morning for a hearing on the charge of having sold liquors in Portsmouth without a license from the federal government. He was brought in by Deputy United States Marshal 1. W, Beems of Harlan. An interesting question is involved in the case as tho facts are stated by the parties interested, Webber lives mnear Denison and has an uncle who has been running a temperance billiard ~ hall in Portsmouth for some time past. He consulted a banker of Portland to tind ont the proper way to go to work to get a government license for the business, and e claims that he was told that 1t would make no difference whether the license wus issued from Council Bluffs, Burlington or Dubuque and the application s therefore sent to Dubuque. It ved soon after, and ever since Webhber been running his saloon, Dubuque, however, is in the Third district, while Portsmouth is in the Fourth Webber received a call from a coilector not long ago, who wanted to sec his license. Upon being shown it, he pronounced it no good, as it had been issued from the wrong district.
