Whitelaw & —— Two Fires, The fire department was called out yester- day atternoon at 2 o’clock to the residence of Mrs. Elizabeth Noack, at 245 Vine street. Mrs. Noack had just lighted a gasoline stove and left the room for 8 moment. Wnen she rewrned her room in the upper story of she house was in flames. It was some time be- fore the fire was extinguished, and in the meantime all the furniture in the room had been more or less injured by the flames ana the water. Telephoue 257, THEY RAISED THE DEAD. Blasters on Bluff street Uncover Eight Indian Skeletons. +lor several weeks past workmen have been blasting ou the hill just behind the residence of Mr. W. W. Wallace on Bluff strcet. In the course of the last three weeks no less than eight skeletons have been unearthed. Six of them were of adults, while the otuer two had belonged to small children. The skeletons show unmistakivle signs of having been those of Indians. With each oue were found pieces of Indian blankets, some of which had been gaily decorated with such ornuments as were dear to the Indian heart. One of the oodies had been buried in a sitting posture, while the other had been lain away torest in_the most approved modern fashion, excepting that but one had a coftin. One of theskeletous had evidentiy belongzed to one of the four hundred in Indian_ circles, as his body had been honored vy being encased in a rouxh oak box. With the bones was a tomabawk and a large number of strings of beads. 1 the bones were in a good state of preservation. As fast as they were humed they were made of with the workmen and by some small bo -Som> of the.bones, however, were kept out S| vhl and are now lying in one corner of the yard. An injunction suit which bas just been commenced in the district court by Henry N Yapp against John Linder and J. L. Peter throws a new light on the failure of the Council Bluffs chop house, which occurred last week. Yapp states that he sigued a lease of ‘the property at 15 Bain street, baviug been induced to do so by Linder, who represented that he had the control of the property, and tho right to ex- ecute the lease. Cuicago, May 18.—The situation between the Northwestern railroad company and its discharged switchmen remains unchanged. The ofticials of the road say they will re.cm- ploy such of the discharged men as they are satisfied will prove faitbful and efficieat em- ployes, provided they make application for reinstatement at once. The business of the road continues to run as usual, Gneral Manager Whitman states the posi- tion of the compuny as follows: employes of the company as are capable aud acceptable will be given preference in i all vacancies tnat occur in our switching service. So long as those at present em- ployed are capable and are desirous of con- tinuing in our service they will be retained. Those oid discharged men who have engaged the company in incessant troubles by foment- ing strikes will never again be employed by this company. Hereafter the company’s of- ficials aud ot the Switchmen's Mutual Aid association will run the company’s affairs.” Many of the discharged men recognize the fact that they will not be taken back and are seeking employment elsewhere, Coal Operators Try Bulldozing. Pittsburg, Pa., May 18.—A special from Scottdale, Pa., says: Operators are making a most determined effort to force the men at the miners’ convention tomorrow to vote to abandon the strike, while labor leaders on the other hand have been among the men and say they are practically unanimous in their desire to continue out. The Frick and Mc- Clure companies started the Redstone, Youngston, Hawkeye Valley and Oliphant plants with a few men and say they will start five other plants this week. Men are coming into the region in carloads, and it is doubtful if the strikers cau stand the pressure much longer.
