THE ENDLESS CHASE OF THE WHITE WOLF, A Pretty Sioux Prophetess Lylng in the Agency Hospital Pierced by fany Bullets—Her Part at Wounded Knee, Pixe Rivom Aaexcr, 8. D, Feb. 8.— {Special to Tue Ber)—A sad and pitiful sight that has for several weeks drawn the attention and sympathy of the attendants and visitors at the little Episcopal church on the hill, which was converted ipto a hospital after the battle at Woundod Knee, is the pa- tient suffering of one of the inmatos, & straugely and uncommonly beautiful Sioux maiden,~ She isnot pretty or handsome, as the terms are geucrally used, but she pos- sesses a face of natural intelligence, one that is remarkably attractive, and one of those faces that unaccountably photographs itself upon the memory, and the remembrance of which for years associates itself with a f ing of sainess and pity. The newspaper correspondents at Pine Kideo could not the scat of war without paying a parting visit to tho hospital and its strange patient, and each loft some memento at the cot of the suffering Indian girl, and while they had all grown skeptical during their stay at Pine Ridgo regarding the ancient stories of the beauty of Indian maidens, they all agreed that the one in question was an ex- ption to their generai observations d that she was at least attractive, Bright Star, the wounded girl, is a full-blooded In- diun, although the blood of different tribes flow through her veins, and her complexion has just enough of the copper tint to denote native American, Bright Star had an Indian tover, once upon a time, o tho story was told me, but some vears ago ho started out with a party on a hunting expedition, and never returned When the other Indians came back from (he bunt they related tho strango story. He doclared bis determination of following the white WOIf if the chaso lod him on forever, They waited days, weoks and months for the youn it hunter's return, but the chase still led him on. Months were followed by yoars, but the chase had not yot concluded, and then the superstitions Indinus believed that the white wolf was au evil spirit and had led the detor mined young hunter to destruction, wad that for his’ ventursomeness he wus doomed to ride in the chase forever. This botief becamo deep-rooted, so deep, in fact, that Bright Star and her friends refused to beliove the report thather lover was murdered by cowboys, aud for tho good of the story, it is ‘well that the did not belleve it,while they knew that Youny Eaglo was still riding havd aftor the wolf, yet the evil one had transformed both the huntor and his pony into spirits, and in this form thev were often seen the superstitious Indians, riding on the trafl that led to no- where. - Sometimes the spirit of Eagle and his horse would fly along the praireies, and then again they would soar through the sky, but always in the same diroction and always ou the same hopeless and endios chaso aft the whito wolf, The ghostly Eagle be known as the Spirit Hunter, and_he coutd bo secn and heard by the imaginative Indians, upon almost any dark night, trot, trot, along the trail, or whiz, whiz, through' the clouds and ai The evil spirit seemed to take par- ticular delight m _compelung the spirit of Young Eagle to ride hard and furious during thunder storms, and the Indians could hear and sce in the thunder and lightning the ro port aud flash of the Spirit Hunter's gun as hie got within range of theobject of his chase, ana when the rumbling thunder and wind followed they could distinguish an evil laugh at the hunter's hopeless efforts, and the chase went on, When tho Messiah and ghost shirt craze broke out, Bright Star succeeded, to her own satisfaction, and in some inex plicAble way as- sociated the former with tho spirit of Ler lover, the ghostly rainbow chuser, and she expected somcthing to turn up-and it turned. Bright Star had _a ber and brother who were members of Big Foot's band of very hostile Indians, and when they decided to go on the warpath, she followed them, and they took up the march toward the bud lands. Thoyoung girl was a_firm boliever in the Messiah story, and one night while asleop in her father's tepee the spirit of Young Eagle came to her and told her that the Indians must be good and not fight the soldiers, or they would all be sent to the unhapp ing grounds to keep him company in his end- chase. At the same time the spirit fool- ishly told her that he would protect her and that she was bullet-proof. ~ It is suid that Bright Star the next morning rolated her ex- perience and admonished them to heed the spirit warning; but they were hungry for blood or beef and listened not to her story. When the Seventh cavalry and Lieutenant Hawthorne's detachment of artillery under Major Whiteswe overtook tho band on De- cember rested Big Foot, Bright Star again warned the [ndians not to resist, and also asked the soldiers not to harm her people or goad them into fighting. When they wero marched to the fatal gr Wounded Knee and surroundes morning by the joined f Colonel Forsythe and T\ scouts, with several Hotchkiss guns, Bright Star was in the front of her people, and watched every movement on both sides with anxiety, when theattempt was made to disarm the Indians she knew trouble was coming, but she was not concerned about herself for she had faith in the power of the Spirit Hunter to protect her, aud her thoughts were only of her peo. ple. It is said that when the first shot was fired she speang in front of her father to pro- tect him. Alas, poor deluded girl! The father was killed by a bullet that passed through the body of his daughter, and six other eruel, merei bullets pierced the body of the unfortunate girl before she fell, When that dag’s slaughter was completed Bright Star was among the wounded that were removed to the ageucy hospitals— brought here to die—for no one ever e vected that she could survive a day. she still lies upon her cot and patiently enduring the pain, and li may recover, but it will be hothing short of a iiracle, and perhaps her faith in her Spirit protector was not entirely misplaced. Bright Staris a_prophetess, She warns her people against further hostilities against the white people, for she sees that Poor Lo's fighting days are over. She observes, and not altogether without a degree of sad- ness, that the chiefs that once were mighty in council and battle are mighty no more, and the future glory of the 0r must be attaiaed at the plow or other civilized pursuits. And how true are tho observations of the Indian maiden! Of all the long line of Indian greatuess, old Red Cloud is generally regarded as the latter end, and he is .tottering upon the brink of his gruve. Macpeahieutah, as the old man is called in the Ogalalla tongue, has of late years traveled much and was' not slow to recognize the march of civilization, He told his followers that their only salvation from speedy and utter annihilation was peuce. Some of the white people of his acquaiutan have dubbed Red Cloud “‘the Indian Glad- stoue,” and recent events have shown that the title was not altogether undeserved, Red Cloud has a son, known as Juck Ied Cloud, notmore than twenty-three or twenty-four years old, who has an ambition to be a big chief and a bad Indian, and he succeeded din giving the military not a little trouble in the Iate unpleasantness. OBut he is not made of the stuff that made his old father famous, and his appearance is that of a lorse thief and gives a man the impression that he would stab an enemy in the back, but never in the breast. Then there is old chief who is the attack on Custer, now ‘“‘doing chores” around his squaw’: tepee at the agency cutting wood and carrying the baby! Aud isn't thisa fall fora once mighty chief—a warrior bold? Crow Dog ¢ rrying the baby! A fall indeed, Standing Elk was another chief that par- ticipated in the Custer massacre, aud behold himnow! A ragged civilian, dragging him- self about the agency grounds upon a pair of crutches, and wearing upon his bead an old ilk tile that locks as if it had gone through wenty bloody massacres, Ouly the othor say he parted with the last vestige or temento of his once bloody carcer, when he ald his old war bonuet to ‘a relic hunter for m.50. And this is Standing Elk, another fallen monarch! He has a son employed as a government scout, and has proven valua- bie and faithful. A daughter, who is a grad- uate of the Carlisle school, is acting as terpreter at the agency, and w that capieity by Tue Bee correspondent. Rocky Bear was another bad Indian in 1876, but a tour of civilization under Buffalo Bill and Major Burke took all the hostilivy out of him, sud now he can_be scen stalking about the agency, dressed in warm clothing, high-top boots, & long, heavy ulster over- coat and & wide-brimmed black hat, ad this is an Indian who used to delight in the sportive habiliments of our old army blankets and an eagle feather, Chief Little Wound was a hostile until a fow weels ago, when he came under the in- fluence of Miss Sickles, and his reformation was complete, Two Strike was the toughest Roman of them all, but he, oo, has utterly succumbed and his days of hostility are over, When his band of hostiles came into the ageney and saw the array of military strength, old Two Strike shood his head and grunted : *‘Indian fight no more: Indian plow.” and later when I had a talk with him through my interproter he appeared so completely subdued, that to signify his intention 1 remain av peace with the white people forever, he presented Tuw B, through its correspondent, with his old pipe, the Indian’s emblem of peace and friendliness. The warrior's decling is going on surely, resistlessly and hopelessly, and the prophecy and warning of Bright Star is in conformity with facts Corr. old Crow Dog, an credited with leading TO SMOKERS. No Reason Why Any Portion of Nas braska Shoull Not Have a Suflicient Quantity of Good Water, Oneof thy featuros of the presont agita- tion of the iregation question Is the possi- bility of the usoof artesian wolls as a means of water supply in the so-called arid regions of the wost. 8o far as this portains to No- braska it seoms quite cortain that this state may devend imphicitly to a large dogeroo on the underground water supply. The goolc cal formation of Nobraska s tiar, if tho result of caroful re- scarches and invostigations is to bo believed. The surfaco of the stato may for, comparison, beset down as a plane. From Sioux county. in the extreme northwest cor- ner of the state, to Richardson county, in the southeast cornor, this plane slopes from nearly five thousand feet abovo the sea level to only 1,000, The underlying stratanre, how- over, bentin tho form of a basin, the castern edgzes boing uptuened at a considerable anglo, while at the contor is noted a in a marked degree from the plane of the surface. o have artesian wolls in_addition to watey three other conditions are ne (1) Is a porous stratum t water, and this must bo overlaid any un- derlaid by impervious strata, %) It inust bo accessible Lo water at o height suMiciont o give a pre sure that will lusure a tlow at tho surfaco at the point of opening, () At the lower edge there must be inters posed some obstacie offoring suicient rosis- tance to prevent tho outflow of the wator, thus destroying the pressure, ATl theso con ditions aro admirably present in Nebraska, Without ~entering into a lengthy and perliaps abstruse disquisition on the sciontifio — aspects of tho case, it will euffice to say that underneath the tertiary (which lies next to the surface in Novraska), comes the crotaceous and then the carboniferous. The lower member of the cretaceous is the Dakota sand, & gravel deposit especially suitablo to rotain water, it lying between two impervious strata, I6 1s exposed to percolating water at a beight of about seven thousand feot, and is doubiless an_inexhaustible resovvoir. T is one groat drawbuck to its use, and that is near the conter of the state, it dips with the carbomferous to a depth in soms places fully 1,000 feet bolow the sea level and about four thousand foet below the surface of tho earth, This of course rendors it impr: ticablo, but it is arguod, and npt witl cause, by geologists (aimong them Pro of the state university), that there exists nu- merous.anticlinals in’ the folds of the strat which will bring the Dakota smd near cnough the surface to make it availible, The flowing wells at Lincoln, Brownville and Omaha mark the castorn artesian basin of Nebraska, and are on the castern outerop of the carboniferous In the western portion of the state, near the woestern upturn of tho cretaceous is another artesian basin, In tho northern central part of the state is still third by the result of tap- ping the This is tng busin w which N st look for water for artesiun supvly. While the flow from the wells in the” eastern basin, und in the western area on the Dakota sand s yolumin- ous und reliable, the uncertainty of reaching the Dakota sand, although it underlies the western counties eutive, places it out of con- sideration. In Nebraska at least 54,000 square milos, according to Prof. Hicks, are embraced in the catehment basin that 'contributes to the tertiary. Two and one-fourth trillions of cublo feet of water fall on this annually. This gathers in immense basio of shectwater in the various members of thetertiary group. Ordinarily these water beds can be reached by boring from forty to 400 feet. Water readily rises in theso wells, but its flow is hindered by valleys cutting off the level of the porous beds and and allowing the water to escape, preventing the genera tion of suflicient pressure, Along the line ot these valleys will be found springs. Prof, Hicks, as spocial geologist of the National agricultural depavtment, madea carcful ex- amination of the state’s resources in this line and in his exhaustive report suys : “In ovder to have flowing wells from tho tertiary rocks in western Nebraska the drill must penetrate Lo the level of porous beds cousiderably beneath the lowest valloys, There is no certainty of obtainiug a flo this should be done, but it is worth trying. The catchment avea of the tortiary is enor- mous, and all the other conditions of abun- dant subtervancan waters are fulfilled. The witer-bearing stratum is usually gravel. The tertiary has numerous and extensive beds of gravel at difforent lovels, aad this forms an ideally perfect water carrier, “The chance of Howing wells in the torti- aryis not the only consideration respecting tho supply of westorn Nebraska from supter rauean sou upposing that tho prossure shull not anywhero be found suficient to make the water rise and flow out at tho sur- face, the veins are uear enough to be within easy roach of the pump, Artificial means of raising the water have been brought to such verfect at the necessity of pumping is not an insuperable obstacle to the economio use of the water. “The supply is practically inexhaustible, Thousands of cattle are often waterod from a singlo well. Large towns obtain their sun- vl for all purposes from a singlo weil. The ngth of the undertlow is shown by the 1% also, since they arise from the cutting of tie wator. beaving bads by the erosion of the valleys. Fort Robinson requiros 50,000 gailons of water daiiy for its garrison. This is supplied from a single spring without seeming to exhaust one-half of its capcity, Another spring on the military reservation near Crawford flows at the rate of 9,000 gallons -per day. The big spring on the North Loup, in Blaiue county, risos from the bottom of the river with such force s to make a I dome-shaped elevation in the current. “Another evidenco of the vast amouut of the underflow 1s the constant and large vol- ume of rivers in the region of tertiary rocks, The Loup rivers carry a great amount of water and never rise or fall much in the wet- testor dryest weather, That they aro fod by tho underflow 15 apparent from the numer- ous springs at their sources and atmany points along their vatleys. The sandhilly Are great reservoirs of moistura. Phe rain falling upon them sinks at ouca to such depths ns to bo practically out of reach of evaporation, and thenco feeds the springs ana rivers. The lagoons on the tablo lands also collect much uinisturs and deliver it to the underfiow. There are about forty flowine wells in Holt county which obtain their supply from rocks ‘still newer than tho tertiary. They rance from forty to 185 feet in depth, The water rises thirty feet above tho surface in some cases aud flows at the rate of twelve and oue-half gallons per minute, “The underflow in the valleys of the larga rivers is a striking phenomen ‘The invisible Platte is greater than the visible, and its waters are_ purer because they have passed throngh a natural filter composed of miles of sund and gravel. The towns and cities i the valley of the Platte are supplied from the buried river which flows bencath their sit The quality is_excellent and the quantity in- exhaustible. The question of possible co tamination from the surfaco should not bo overlooked in the location of the wells.” This encourages the belief that o menns will yet be devised to make available the im- menso rainfall of the state, which now is ‘al- lowed to drain away through the sub-strata of the state, and use it for the natural pure poso of aiding in_erowing crops, Artesian wells are not the least importaut foature of irrigation, and the local zoological features of overy community removed from an ubundant supply of surface water, should be carefully considered. A study may develop the fact that @ plentiful water supply lies not far bo- neath the surface, and can be reached for a very small expense, - Miss Bessie H.
