About six years ago the girl began to manifest incor- vigivle tendencies and they decided to send her to the couvent of the Good Shepherd, kept by the Sisters of Mercy in St Louis, They have sup- vorted her at the convent, and but & few weeks ago, just before Christmas, Mrs. Schmidt said she sent her a box of clothing and received a very nice letter in response in which the girl said she was doing well and had joined the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin. New York, Jan, 29.—[Special Telegram to Trne Ber,]—The linseed oil men finished their conference today and adjourned, having accomplished the objects for which they came together. Oue of these objects was an ad- vance in the price of their product and, as a result of the meeting, a new scale of rates was adopted, to take effect immediately. It involves an advance of about 1 cent per gallon. For Buffaloand the west, the new rate is 52 cents; for New York aud Pennsylvania, 53 cents; for the seaboard cities, except Boston and other New England ports, b4 cents, and for Boston aud New England, 55 cents. To end what was termed the unmercantile action of some of the houses in the trade was, however, the great purpose ot the conyen- tion, and this was brought about. A sore POINT with many of the mauufacturers has been the fact that some of their brethren, es pecially those in the west, have becn making contracts far ahead, in fact to the end of the season in July. Much of the time of the ses- sion was devoted to dealing with the prob- lem thus presented and it was solved by ar- ranging to take care of these contracts. Some of them have been transfered and, in that way, the various manufactures have been brought into a more contented state of mind. No ussociation was formed, it was declared, and those who entered into the arrangement were not put under bonds to carry out their promises of co-operation. There was no division of territory among those present. committee was appointed, howev s a sortof board of arbitration incase of dispute under the agreement. Everybody present at the meeting agreed to follow the plan adopted. The concerns represented have o capital of about £25,000,000 and are claimed to include all the linseed oil houses of any im- portance in the country except three or four. These have beeu taken care of, however, in the arrangement and they uré expected to fall into line, Colonel Thompson, president of the lead trust, which _represents about one-eighth of the 1useed oil production of the country, said today that no attempt would be made to restrict production, On the contrary, efforts would be madeto increase both the pro- duction and consumption, One Hundred a Thirty Dead.
