Few people living in Omaha appre- ciate the magnitude of the wholesale trade of this city, The yearly aggre- gate mounts way up into the millions. A representative of this paper called at the ofice of Marks Bros., 1407 Harney strest, on business, and was surprised to learn of the immense business being done by them in the great northwest. Through the kindness of one of the brothers, THE BEE man was shown through the stock and work rooms. The building is 150 feet, five stories and basement, all occupied by their stock and work rooms. The basement contains a stock of leather, hames and bales of material. Upon the first floor is found an immense stock of harness hardware. A well appointed office and shipping room are also on this floor. The second floor is given up to tho stor- age of manufactured harness boxed for shipment. These goodsare of all styles and prices, from the heaviest draft to the elegantly mounted carriage har- ness. On the third floor is the saddle manufacturing room. Thisfloor is sup- plied with a small engine used to run the five monster sewing machines operated upon this floor by August Schamer and S. W. Bliss. Mr. Jacob Schamel is the efficient foreman of the saddlery department and knows all about a saddle from croup to crupper, a workman through and through. In their large stock room can be seen any- thing from the pouderous cowboy saddle to the daintiest side-saddle for a lady. The fourth floor is occupied asa harness manufacturing room, and is presided overby Mr. A. F. Demme as foreman and A. W. Dorfmeyer as assistant fore- man. Both of thess gentlemen are master workmen and kuow just what a harness ought to be. Away up on the fifth floor is the cutting room. There can be seen leather in all sorts of shapes, resembling o play-house full of straps. But under the skillful manipulation of the workmen they grow into elegant trappings for the horse. In addition to this large establishment, Marks Bros. have a large building on Thirteenth street, used exelusively for the manu- facture of horse collars. There are five of the Marks brothers, three of whom are constantly in the house and two are upon the road. 'I'ney established their basiness in 1872, siuce which time they have been doing a constantly increasing business, Their trade now covers the entire northwest and extends east to the Mississippi. They employ sixty men and have a yearly pay-roll of 50, 000, They manufacture 8,000 sets of harness every year. The efficient book- keeper of this great wholesale house is Miss Ella Kauffman, whose obliging manner and correct ballances are thoroughly appreciated by her em- ployers.
