JD NEAR 9115 HEABT. ated in an Attempt Des! netion, John Eller, a paving inspector who has been working for Hugh Murphy, attempted to commit suicide in the United States hotel, at the corner of Tenth and Dodge streets, Mon- day night. He fired a pistol shot, the bullet of which passed entircly through tho left side of his body, just missing his heart, He 18 still lying very low, but has a chance of re ug. The would-be suicide gave as a cause for his rash attept at self-murder was that ho has been thrown out of work several times of late. e had been drinking quite heavily just before shooting himself. Eller1s a powerfully built wman, thirty sears of age. His parents live in asmpall town inIndians, about oue hundred miles enst of Chicago. The vietim was suffering excrugiating tor- monts late yesterday afternoon. Yet he bore up bravely under the pain. His associates and physicians are afording him all the relief possible. Eller was to have gone to Des Moines yostorday, it is_stated, in search of work, but it seems likely now that his rash act will: prevent him forever from making the trip. The Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley has made an excursion rate of £10.25 for the round trip between Omaha and Long Pine, Neb, for the Chautauqua which opens at that place Thursday next. The entertainment will last until July 27, and owing to a large number from Omaha hav- ing expressed a desire to attend, the Blk- horn has laced tickets on sale at the above reduced auates. 15 it Discriminating? The trans-Missouri lines have given notice that, on July 26, the rate from Denver to go will be restoredto the old rate, The Western States Passenger asso- ciation, however, ks as yet, tken no action and the rate west from Chicago to Denver still remains at §206, no notice having as yet been given of a rvestoration. Some of the ¥ enger agents are of the opinion that, to make a distinetion in rates from a longitudi- nal standpoint is a discrimination. Others claim that Chairman Cooley of the interstate commerce commission has already given his ovinion to the effect that in re hauls no connection in rates could be established. It is thought, however, that the Western wssenper association will tuke steps tore the thrcugh rate to its former Will 1t Collapse. A well-known railroad official who has just returned from a meeting of the Inter-state Ruiiway association, stated that the august combine was in bad shape, and that its col- lapse was regarded a certaioty. He also stated that the railroad situation, as regards rates, was in bad shape, and thata disastrous rate-war could not much longer be averted. Avpointed Supcrintendent.
