THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. A Cablegram Proves to bo the Sen- sation in Wheat. A DISPOSITION TO SELL CORN. Oats Average Fivmner Activity Noted -- llvars Have the Call in Provisions—Cate tle About the Same. Bt no Special CHICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS, Cireaco, July 16.-~[Special Telogram to Tie Bie,)—The sensation in the wheat mar- ket to-day was a special cablegram published this morning in New York and in the Chicago Times, giving the main points in the crop and market article in the London Times. The salicnt features of the articles were statements that the latest advices from Bom. bay show that Iudia will have little or no wheat for shipmont; that Kussia, Australia, Roumania and eastern Germany will not raise more thau enough to feed themselves: that western urope and the United King- dom will ruiso 50,000,000 bushels more than last year; and that the Odessa graineries are almost enipty, e article concludes with the statement that the great importing countries of Europe will be more at the mercy of America this year than usual. During the morning a variety of attempts were made to break the force of this summary of tho situation, but the con- clusions were nearly in accord with the 1deas of the best informed members—that no serious impression was made in the discred- iting. The news of the next greatest im- portance was the further disappointient in receipts of wheat here and at all southwest- ern points. Raiay we ather in the Ohio val- ley, Kansas and Missouri may account for this in & great measure, but it is none the less certain that the bears are greatly dis- gruntled over nono of thy realization of their nigh hopes, based on the belief that therc was surely zoing to be a huge early move- ment. Wheat was grown and will como into ®1ght some time, but the bears arc losing tho moral effect of the big early movement counted on with sucn confidence. The mar- ket was weak and lower *'in offices yester- day, but this morning opened L@l up, with July quoted at 7i3{c, September at 76%¢c, and December at 84:c. December ad- vanced to 70c and September to 77%c. July, too, showed its horus and advanced to T8%{c, and then, on a second spurt, to 79ige. The big break in July had its effect in dis- couraging country shipments, and holders once more displayed nerve, July wheat was @ scarco articie 10-day. This may be aue in part to the demand for cash wheat, which was quite urgent ut times, and a reduction in the estimated arrivals for to-morrow from 140 10 00 cars also had its effect. The vash wheat situation may be quoted ns strong everywhere to-day. December wheat re- acted from 1914 to 783ge, but the market ro- covered later and the 'ground lost was all regained, though it was not entirely held, The inst quotations on_the wheat s follows: _July, 7igc; Aug September, 770; Decembor, 1850, Those prices mark a general udvance as compared with $yesterday, ranging from ¥(c on the long futures to S15c for July, The volume of trade was 1 in the aggregate, A gratifying increase in outside orders was re- ported by commission merchants and trado seems to be “limbering up” somewhat. Local professionals seem to _be about eveniy divided as to the merits of wheat, though the market acts as though 1t might be still considerably oversold. Local engagements of luke freight room for 80,000 bushels are reported to-dny. St. Louis' received 83,000 bushels to-day. Foreigners were hberal buyers here and at New York to-day, and yet, singular to relate, kept plugging this market with boar dispatohes up to” the vary ast. ‘There was a general disposition to sell corn in view of the heavy outside movement from here and the ready man- mer n which all offerin in cash corn are absorbed. The leto raius have likewise retarded the growth, although the prospect at present presented by the growing crop is encouraging for o good yield in the absence of further accident. ‘The upward thdency of the wheat market encouraged the bulls in corn, and the price in the end was established at o }{e advance over yester- day's closing figures. July rested at #3i5c, and September at 85%@353{c. Oats averaged frmer on the regular mar- ket, though at no time was there any special activity, and the unimportant improvement was chiefly on account of fair outside buying orders and no préssure to sell. The strengtiy in wheat and corn cxerted a slight unfluence on oats. Trade centered in September and May, with the former at 217(@22. May touched 22c, or o advance, but strength was not sustained. For July 22ic as bid, with a trade or two finaily at 22,c. 2 regular sold at 2214 to arrive, T ceipts wero large and withdrawals increased 10 78,000 bushels, In provisions the bear side had the call, The feoling was weak, and for property of all kinds vrices wero considerably lower. Trading, however, was narrow and - without special features. 'Hogs were easier, bu failed to stimulate business in any dir Operators were conservatively inclined and {ndisposed to do much more than an occa- sional scalp. The leaders showed decided indifferenco toward the market, and from outside sources the demand was compara- tively insignificant, orders of all des tions being under an averago in number. In pork thoe day'sactual decline amounted to 17} c, in short ribs to 10@121gc and in lard Lard was relatively stronger than upanion articles, selling for ient to the extent of 2,550 tierces at .3214@0.85. The demand for cash meats was only moderate and the few salcs ro. ported were made on private terms. ~For 16- pound green hams 83(c was the public ask- ng price. Tho favorite future delivery was again September, wl lenh s0ld at §11.20@11.45 for pork, §6.3734(@6. for lard, and &.07b¢ @5.80 for short ribs. ® Pork for Septerbor closed ut §11.223¢, tard at $.373, and short ribs at £.67¢ bid. August ranged 7i¢c under September for pork, 100 for lard, and b@7ge for short ribs. Thé product for next win- ter's delivery was quiet. CHIOAGO LIVE BTOOR MARKEX.
