Oontractor Naugle Says That He ts Guiltless of the Oharge. 1t has been charged against E. E. Naugle, the paving contractor, that he is unneces- sarialy delaying the work. Mr. Naugle was awarded the contract for laying cypress blocks on sand and plank, and Jerry Ryan & Co. were given the con- tract for cedar blocks on concrete. Mr. Nau- gle went into partnership with Ryan & Co. in the paving contract. Upon his personal bond for $20,000 Naugle has as securitics Louis 8. Reid and A. P. Hopkins, and on the firm bond for 75,600, the signature of H. D. Shule appears as securit, . Mr. Balcome, chairman of the board of public works, was asked if it were true that Mr. Naugle was delaying the work of ypav- ing, fWhy,” sald ho. “there was nover any paving ordered _until last night. 1t will be about a week before the ordinance is ap- proved, and then before the |‘n\'ln5 can be commenced the curbing must be done, and that will take three woeks longer. No, I should say that Mr. Naugle had not delayed the work.” “Do you want to know the inside facts about the matter?” asked a gentlewan who stood near, “Phe fight upon Naugle is made by Hugh Murphy, Jin eighton, and a few othor members of the old-time combine. 1T they can siceeed in_knocking him out in any way Riley & Co.. would get the eontract.’ “Con Gullagher and Fred McConnell are also gunning for Naugle.” said the same party, “asserting that he oroke faith with them nnd repudiated a contract in which he had agreed to purchase from them the broken stone needed for the work, and instead had made a contract with John Rowland for the same material.” Mr. Gallagher was seen at the postofico and asked whether tho contract was made with Ryan & Co. or with E. E. Naugle. “It was made in the nune of Ryan & Co.,” said Mr. Gallagher, “but was signed and ap- proved by Naugle, whom we all know to bo a member of the firm of Ryan & Co. We shall hold him to the contract and shall sue him for an amount equal to the sum he will pay for the stone.” Mr. Naugle was called upon and asked if he ever made a_contraci with Gallagher or McUumlull, and he said positively that he had not. The animus of the whole thing, he claimed, comes from Gallugher and M- Connell, who are kicking because thoy cannot get their stone in. ‘‘The statements made by a morning paper to the cffect that ‘the young man' (meaning me) didn’t have a two-cent postage stamp, I can readily ropudi ro- ferring to the Dun Commerecial agen the Commercial Nutional or Nebraska Na- tional bunk.” Don’t Get Caught This spring with your blood full of im- purities, your digestion impaired, your appetite poor, kidneys and liver torpid, and whole system liable to be prostrated by disense—but get yoursell into good condition, and ready for the clmngmw and warmer weather, by taking Hood’s Sarsaparilla, It stands unequalled fo purifying the blood, giving an appe- tite, and for a general spring medicine. MARKET AND OITY HALL. Tho Proposttion to Use the Ol Grand Opera House. Hon. A. J. Poppleton was asked yesterday what thero was in the storyof the sale of the exposition building to the city. Mr. Pop- pleton replied thatall he knew about it was that the company was negotiating with the city for the sale of this property, as well as the unexpired lease of the lot on which the building stands. Mr. Poppleton owns the ground upon which the building has boen erected. Ho ieased the same to the compuny for a period of thirty years, with an appraisement to be made overy Five-sixihs of the time of the lease yet remained. ““What use does the city expect to make of this building " “That I know nothing about. I ooly ienoy-that n9gotiations arc pending for a sale of the same by the cxposition compeny to the city,” answered the gentleman. The provosition made by {he Kxposition association comprises the turning of the west end of the structurc intoa market house tion of the other part s a city Fred G iray was spoken to about the matter and admitted that in bebalf of the exposi- tion association he and John A. McShane had made a proposition to Mr. Poppleton touch- ing the disposition of the building, but would not state what terms had been offcred. He stated, however, that Mr, Poppleton’s an- swer would be given to-day. John A. McShane was seen by a reporter for Tne Bee und asked what proposition 1 been made to the city and Mr. Foppleton egurding the sale of the building and the matter in which it was to be used. But the gentleman stated there was nothing for pub- lication and suggested that Fred Gray and Mr. Waliace be seen, Mr. Wallace waus seen but declined to talk. Mr. Poppleton’s answer, which, 4s above intimated, %is to be given to-day, will be awaited with some interest, It is well known that he bas opposed the alteration of the Grand opera house into a market building and favors the erec- tion on the site of a good hotel It is thought that this Opposition may yot result in the conversion of the building into an expesition hall, as originally intended. It is known that there are citizens in town who would favor such a move, and who are anxious to ussist in a financial way. Excursion Rates “Over the M. K. & T. Ry. to the Spring Palace, F't. The Missouri Pacific Will Meet the Alton Cut Rate. The Missouri Pacific announces that in case the Chicago & Alton putsin a 10 cent rate on lumber botween Chicago und Kansas City, it will make a corresponding cut in the rate from points south to Omaha, The yel low pine material of the south has gained a considerable foothold among cousumers, and the white pine i many instances has been { driven out of the market on uccount of pref- | evonce bolng given the former by consumers, The product of the district traversed and reached by the Alton is white pine, and for { this reason, wny cut made in rate must be met by rouds in the low pme district in order to protect | the marke their patrons. An attache of the Missouri Pacific said: *“The Alton has done consid- erl\ble grumbling of late and made repeated threats to cut the lumber rates to Kansas City. The cut will be met by the Missouri Pacific and other roads, so you see the Alton has nothing to gain in the increase in trafoc and on the other hand will experience a heavy icss in the revenue from the lumber traffie. My theory is that the Alton is doing its utmosat to create an eraption in the inter state railway association in view of dissolu- tion.” The Grain TrafMo. The grain trafic has increased in volume within the past week and the prospects are that the greater porcentage of the grain now in the hands of the farmers will be marketed before another crisis occurs. Monday the Union Elevator company -in this city received ninty-cight cars of grain; Tues- day forty-eight cars and the receipts to- day will run up to about sixty-five car loads, About 95 per cent is corn. The grain mor- chants state that at the present rate, it will require about nincty days time to handlo all able grain 1n sight. They also predict a steady market. Of the grain re- ceived of late at the Union elevator, a large porcentage is shipped from Union Pacific points in the Stromsbere district, while sev- eral large shipments have boen received from Grand Island and Columbus. Killed by an Engine. While crossing the Union Pacific tracks at the intersection of Iieventh and Leaven- worth streets yosterday, a horse driven and owned by J. Vanderloot was struck by an engine and instantly killed. The ariver escaped uninjured, It is reported that Van- derloot will sue the company tor damages. He nsserts that the engine approached at a rapid rate of speed-without souuding any alarm, that no flagman was located at the point, ‘and he was ght eutirely unaware of the approach of the engine. He places his damages at §150, Better Terminal Facilities. Vico-President Clark and other officers of the Missouri Pacific ins) the Belt line and territory through which it passes Tnes- day. John A. Smiley, who owns considerable realty in the vicinity of the fair grounds, has asked the company to extend a_branch ' tine across his property in order that it may be opened up to manufacturing industries, General Oftices Closed. JiAs SLE l}l’ SIDE BY SIDE. The Remains of O, I, Dav's Placed Beside Those of His Wafe, The funeral of Mrs. Oscar F. Davis oc curred yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. It took place at the Flirst Presbyterian church, the Rev. Dr. Harsha oficiating. There was a large number of friends present to pay their last respects to the dead. The services at the church and grave were more impres- sive than usual, owing to the fact that the remains of Mrs. Davis’ life partner, Mr. O. F. Davis, had been disinterred and laid to reft again beside those of the deceased lady. In June, 1887, Mr. Davis died and was buried in Prospect Hill cemetery, It was the general wish that Mrs. Davis be buried i Forest Lawn cemetery, and in order that the husband and wife, who had done so much for Omaha, from a religious and chari- table standpoint, might rest side by side, the remains of Mr. Davis were taken up. Though two years benoath the sod, tho coftin bore no signs of decay, and there was nothing to 1ndicate that it had been boneath the ground except the wreath of flowers that was laid on the casket. This had withered, but that was all, Owing to the close relations which Mr. and Mrs. Davis bore to the Presbyterian church, Mr. Harsha's remarks were more touching than usual. The sentiment of his heart, ex- pressed in words and indicated 1n his lccllm; was general among those who attended the service, and the majority of those present wept during the delivery of the sermon.
