Sensation. ‘The final chapter in the Wilson-Wilson di- vorce case came to & close yesterday. The plaintiff, Alice Wilson, was granted an abso- lute decree of divorce by Judge Deemer, and also the custody of the children. It is under- stood that according to certain terms of set- tlement between the parties the defendant, Robert Wilson, is given possession of what is known as the Muilis property, on Upper Broadway, but nothing of this kind appeared n the decree of the court. The case wae pending for several months, and attracted a great deal of interest. Out of this case grew anoiher of far more inter- est, being that of the defendant in the first case, Robert Wilson, vs Charles Hannan, cashier of the Citizens’ bank, for £50,000 dam- ages for alienating the affections of the plain- Uff’s wife, adultery and kindred charges, This case was also disposed of and dismissed yesterday at the same time as the first. The charges preferred could not be substantiated and the case fell flat, after creating o vast amount of capital stock for the scandal- mongers and sensational sheets, The complete vindication of Mr. Hannan comes not as any surprise. In business and social circles there were few, if an; who pelieved that any of the insinuations or charges were based on facts. Still it has been very annoying, to say the least to have one’s name paraded 8o sensationally before the public. Toone inMr. Hannan’s position this was peculiarly so. The aldermen sitting as a board of equal- ization are finding plenty to think of and tulk of. So have those who are fortunate, or unfortunate, enough to have any property 10 be ussessed. “They ought to be called a board of assess- ment, instead of a board Of equalization. The pssessor himself raised the total assess- ment about a million and a half, and now the city council has raised him so that the total will reach about $9,000,000.” This expression voices the sentiment and belief of many of those who crowd about the door, eager to get a chance to kick about their assessments being raised. On the ofticial side this is denied. While the uime has not arrived for tha footing of the columns, the exact figures can not be obs tained, and all is conjecture. The officials estimate however, that the total assessment will not reach more than $7.000,000, It is denied that the board has been anything buu equalizing. Some huve been rais.d, some lowered—a little more raising than lowering ~—80 that the total will be a little more than that returned by the assessor. Much of the raising done this year has been 1n the assessed valuation of bottom lots. Proverty which was two years ago assessed at $50 an acre is now assessed at more than that per lot. ‘The ussessor has put a pretiy 8Uff asscssment on these lots, and the board s rmsed him about 50 per cent in mai ‘The alleged rule is to make the as- sessed valuation about one-third of the real valuation, On moneys and credits not more than 30 per cent of the real valuation is as- ‘The question was put to one of the s it that real estate is put per cent and moneys und cred- its put down at only 8C per cent!” The reply was Lo the effect that there were 80 few who admitted baving any money that these few should be rewarded and encournged. The commuuity seems to be suldealy stricken with a scarcity of cash, The bunks of the city have always been awong the lightest taxed institutionse If they had been compelled to pay in propor- tion to what those psy who own simply a little howe, the city’s treasury would have been fur better filled, As usual the board 18 not satisfied with the ussessment turned in by tho asscssor and proposes raising these monied powers. FPresently the car sthppbd and .an intoxicated man—a big, burly individual —entered. He swung tmeasily from side to side for n fow rom then a man who snt next to the young lady moved along and left little space on “the seat. The drunkard made n lunge for the place and cnme into an unpleasant contact with the young lady. “Aw-aw, my dvah fellow,” protosted the dude, ‘‘you must'nt do that, you know.” The man, though quite intoxicated, was not apparently in a fighting mood. He grinned, got upfand stood in the middle of the car, surging from side to side agnin. Now and then he bumped against the dude, who repeated his pro- testation: “Aw, my dyah fellow, you mustn’t do that, you know!” But presently the drunkard showed a disposition to ‘feet that he was bemng trampled upon. He reasserted his right to the fragment of a seat and made a another lunge for it. ‘*Conductah! conductah!™ called the swell. “Aw-—this man must be ejected from the cah, don’t you know. He's in- ebwiated!” The conductor declined to interfers. The plain fact undoubtedly was that he was a coward and dare not touch the drunkard, The dude’s face showed no sign any emotion whatever; he leaned over, took the drunkard by the coat collar, stood him on his feet, started him to- ward the door, opened it with his disin- gaged hand, pushed the fellow out, and calmly thrust him off on the pavement. Then he came back with face as expressionless as ever “Aw, very disagweeable, don’t you know!” he said. it An Enterprising Youngster. The little fi ar-old son of H. C.
