GREAT DRY GUODS BLAZE. The Globe Warehouse Burned Out— Los~, $160,000. A SCRANTON, PENN,, FIRE. An Eastern Dry Goods Nearly All Goods Saved From the Fire, But Damaged by Water. An Omaha Firm Buys the Stock. Fire was discovered in the salesroom of the mammoth dry goods establish- ment of the Globe warehouse on Wy- pming avenue, (Scranton, Pa. For two bours it raged fiercely despite the her- culean efforts of the firemen and when it was finally under control the sales- room was completely gutted, entailing a loss estimated at $150,000, The flames were first diccovered through a skylight by the offico boy of Harry C. Reynolds, whose quarters are on the second floor back. An alarm was given at once but before the department could arrive the fire had eaught in the light, inflammable material displayed on every hand, ana had spread throughout the salesroom. Parties who were standing on the walk say the fire was first seen by them in the center of the sales- room. Within a few minutes it had flared up in all parts of the room. When the firemen arrived they had to fight the fire from the point it which they entered. down through the store to the rear and back again. The store was completely filled with goods in- tended for the spring trade, which burned like tinder, baflling the firemen for a time and rendering their work most difficult. At 9 o'clock the exertion of the de- artment bogan to tell and 1n_enother alf hour the last spark had disap- peared. The scene within the sal room was one seldom witnessed in th city. Pools of water several inches dewp were upon the floor. The stock, much of - which had fallen from the shelves and counters, was completely soaked with blackened water. The en- tire interior presented a charred ap- pearance, the flame of several gas jets and incandescent lights feebly illumi- nating a scene of ruin and black desolu- tion. A dozen or more clerks hurried back and forth nailing up windows and doors and doing what little they could to save from further damage the stock which had escaped the flames, but which had been soaked by water. The goods saved by tho firm were in the three-story annex in tho rear. These the flames did not touch, and as it was unnecessary to turn a stream on that portion of the establishment, it also escaped damage by water. Mr. Simpson, a member of the firm of Clelland, Simpson & Taylor, proprietors of the store, was seen by a reporter after the flames were under control. He said he thought the firm carried a stock worth about $200,000. The stock in the main salesroom was badly dam- aged, there being at a rough estimate 8160,000 worth of goods in that one room. The stock is insured in many different companies for about $175,000, probably insuring the firm against loss. The fire attracted a crowd of many thousand people who crushed about the store doors in such a v as to inter- fere with the work of the department. Several policemen were stationed near the door to keep the crowd back, which they were ouly partially able to do. The firemen might have been a little more prompt in responding were it not for the fact that they had a most ex- citing election in progress which drew nearly all to the council rooms, Hence they were a little longer in securing their equipments than usual, The Globe Warehouse is the ac- knowledged leading dry goods house in the city. Itemployes a small army of 100 clerks, the most of whom find them- selves out of employment at a time when it was least expected. The firm consists of John Cleland, John Simpson and David T. Taylor, and has been in business in Scranton about twelve years. Tt has branch stores in Pittston, Allen- town. Carbondale and Trenton, N. J. The building was owned by the firm and is damaged to a considerable ex- tent, though not so much as might have been expected, The officos op the sec- ond floor suffered some, the flames breaking through into the quarters of James H. Torrey, John P. Albro and Paul R. weit: Mr. Simpson is of the impression that the flames caught from the electric lights, the insuluting material on the wire taking fire and transmitting the flame on all the wive within the s: room. He believed this to be the gon whny the fire spread so rapidly. There was no fire in the store outside +of the engine-room in the basement, and 1t is certuin that the flames did not orighmtu there. The above account-of a fire is t, (rom the Scranton, Penn., Republican, and is given prominence in THe Brg from the fact that the entire stock has just been purchased from the insurance l.om])nmvs by Messrs. Brandies & Sons, of this city. Mr. E.” Brandies, who was in New York city at the time, heard of the fire and at once repnived to Scranton, and found about forty would-be huy rs already on the ground, who were unable to make the purchase from the insurance compunies, as they considered the goods too badly dam- aged, but Mr. Hrandeis, who has had considerable experience in such mat- ters of late, saw at a glunce that it ws only the goods on top that were dam- aged, the goods underneath being as sound as ever, He made the insurance to[upulnes up offer, which, although not oing one-eighth of the value of the stock, was at once accopted, soods turned over to him, eis immediately ken and the Mr. Bran- chartered a freight traiu of thirteen cars, i which he loaded the goods. After the first few hours of loading had passed he found thut he had struck even a greater bo- nanza thun he thought, as only the outer folds of the goods were damnged, while the rest of the piece’ wus not damaged at all, When it eame to moy- ing the goods from the annex, they were found to be not the least damaged., The railway company posit guaranteed to bring this sy 1 train through to Omahu by Thursday night, aud the goods will be placed on sale Monday at THE FAIR, J. L. Brandeis & Song, Proprictors. Over at Manawa. A few days ago u letter from the Frene consul at Chicago was vriated in Tug B in which he igguired for one deceas George Emmet Tamisier, saying that the French minister of foreign afMairs was seek: ing information concerning him. Hon. Alvin Saunders returned from Wash- ington yesterday morning, “I left there Sunday. ‘‘Senator Manderson and I went before the committee on the postofMoe location and sub- mitted our cases and the matter now rosts with thom. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Batcheldor, a member of the com- mittee, was called away from Washington Saturday and proposed to be gone several days, 80 I see no possibility of a decision in the matter being arrived at this week. But little can be advanced as to the result as the gentlemen of the committee express no opinion in the matter and will ot do 8o until it has been fully decided. A decision will be rendered, 1 think, immediately upon the return of Mr. Batchelder to Washington. “'I heard but little concerning a change in the postmastership. Street rumor in Wash- ington has it that Mr. Gallagher will serve his term out. I thought any change in the oftice belongod alone to the business of Sen- ator Manderson, as senator. But I didn’t think this way in regard to the postofiice lo- cation. Of course he had a perfect right as a private citizen to advoeate the seloction of one site or another, but not in the officiul capacity u{ senator. “I heard the re-location of Kort discussed some, but I had my with the postoffice location, and paid but litde attention to the fort. Thearmy oficers there say that the proposed site at Bellevue 18 too far from water, and is rendered unde- sirable for that reason, To whom 1 talked on the subject, I ad- vocated the condemnation and burchase of sufficient land adjoining the present fort to meet all requircments, The military au- thorities say that the matter was never put before them in that light before. “T ghall not go to Utah until the 20th of June, the president ng received a tele- gram from there Friday saying that I would not be needed until the 20th of June, and ad- journment having been taken at that time. ‘I left the president and his family all well Omaha ds full the few tith except the older McKee children, who are sick, The babies are all right. The papers don’t lie: the president thinks lots of “Benny,” the oldest baby, and will stop anything to attend ‘to the baby's wants. The president takes a walk every afternoon at 4 o'clock and it seoms to have a good effect upan him. The other day ho walked clear over to George- town, Russell will be along here in a few days, en route o Montana, where he goes to look ' after toe libel suit which hus been brought against him. “1 understand that some of the Omaha papers have been slapping me during my ab- sence. I have nothing to say concerning them. T have been around the ‘world a good deal in my life and can overlook such stuff.’” Unquahfi:a Approval.
