As Jailor Galvin was sitting in front of the city jail, last night, a stranger in a state of double-jointed intoxication happened along, barely managing, with the greatest exertion, to confine himself within the limits of the street. “Ten to one that fellow trics to break in here,” remarked the jailor, watch- ing tho pilgrim’s painful attempts at locomo- tion. Sure enough, the fellow passed on into the station, oblivious of the little group out- side, and demanded a bed. It was furnished him, after he haa given the name of J, Wil- #on, and a few scconds later J, Wilson was booked on the police register as a drunk. TIn the column where the name of the officer making the arrest shoutd have been, appearea the words, “‘Walked in.” It is the first case ©f the kind recorded there. Dr, C. block. e Razen, deutist, Opera house HANSEN FULLY EXONERATED, The Jury fays He Killed Madison In Self-Defense. MANAWA'S CONTINUED BOOM. The News In the Courts—1he Fire Lads Fixing For the Races— Items of General Interest. The Jury Did Not Censare. The coroner’s jury investizating the death of Waiter Madison returned a verdict yes- terday afternoon to the offect that the “do ceased came to his death from a bullet fired from a revolver by Peter Hansen while de fenaing himself from an assault made upon him by a number of persons, of whom the decensed was one.”! As will be seen from the verdict the testi- mony almost wholly wentto show that the homicide was acting in self-defense when he fired the shot that robbed a fellow man of his life. This, however, does not effectually dispose of the case, as Hansen will yet be put upon trial for his life for murder in the first degree. The time has not yet been fixed for his preliminary examination, but will be determined by the attorneys, J. I Organ for the state, and G. A. Holmes for the defense, In the testimony introduced at the In- quest the namesof several parties were given as having been with the deceased when he created the dis.urbance at the dance nall, At attempt wade to discover the iden- tity of the entire party, but it was not suc- cessful, Witnesses testifled that one Mc- Clellan, Thomns Brown and Robert and Dick Stack wero members of the party, but those worthies denfed it. Tue Bee made certain investigations out- side, and learned that for years a tough crowd, known as “The Divty Dozen,” has ex- 1sted in the sonthern part of the city. I 2 the crowd has been _known as “The Gang,” and has been engaged in a large number of dis- putablo transictions in that locality, “I'he Gaug is composed of a mumber of young men who have made it an object to render life a8 wretched as possible for the Danes in the southern part of the city. and numerous complaints have been made 0 the police con- cerning them, Several of the members have fizured in police court on numerous oceca- sions for minor offenses, includiug petit lar- ceny, assaults of various degrees, drunken- ness, disturbing the peace, and other misde- meanors of a more or less aggravated nature, Mr. T. J. Smith, the owner of the hall where the fatal dance occurred, states that he has never had any troublo with the outfit, but that they wili not treat a Dane with any degree of decency. ‘Lhey have made u prac tice of blocking up the sidewalk at the cor- ner of Eighth street and Sixteenth avenue, compelling ladies who wished to pass to take the center of the street. A few weeks ago they smashed in the door of the hall while a Danish dance was in progress, and hung around the entrance, in- sulting every lady who appeared in sight. Popular feeling is in sympathy with the verdict rendered by the coroner's jury, and the general expression, while regrotting that a murder was commitied, is that the shoot- Ing was in & manner justitiable, and the vic- tim received the dues of o worthless life. It is hoped that, the lawless companions of the dead man will take a warning from the fate of thew unfortunate brother, and conduct themselves more becomingly in'the future. —~— atiend the big, unre- 1o of Mother of Pearl pictures, ing. at 817 Broadway, ne Keller’s furniture house. stk More Boats for Manawa, & Mr. O. C. Schwerin, proprietor of the Star boat house at Cut-OfF lake, has announced himself in partnership with Mr. Vreeland, and effected o four years’ lease from Ben Marks of a forty foot frontage on Lake Man- awa, just south of the Omaha restaurant, for the purpose of erecting a boat house and dock. The new firm will put twenty-five row boats and five sailboats on the lake, und let them at reasonable prices. The boats are now being built by them in Omaha, Mr. Schwerin being a practical boat builder, and v is promised that thoy will surpass any of the boats now on the lake. Eight of the boats are already completed, and are very pretty models. 'I'he owners propose to have all of them completed in time to move over here by the 1st of June. The tlect of thirty-eight boats now owned by Mr. Schwerin at Cut-Off lake will rcmain there. The members of the Omaha boat club have been trying to induce Mr. Schwerin to move over here for the past two years, and now that the permanency of the luke is assured, he bas concluded to do so. He will guarantee all amateur oarsmen perfect satisfaction in the y of boats and prices. il e A Cottage at Manawa. Buy a lot at Manawa and build. BENSON, SHEPPERD & CO. Hose Teams to Visit Nebraska. It is now decided that both the Eiseman and John N. Baldwin, jr., hose teams will visit Nebraska City next Saturday, to take part in the vaces there. Liberal purses are offered, and the Bluffs boys propose to rattle the greatest part of thew in their pockets on the way home. The rate offered, one fare for the round trip, will induce a large num- ber of Council Bluffs citizens to accompany them. Both teams are in good condition, having a great deal of hard training lately, wnd will make all the races in which they start very lively ones. This probably the last time the two Council Bluffs teams will appear together on the track until the tour- nament, and they will each do some pretty running, For the credit of the city, it is hoped that the Eiseman team will not ap- pear in the same costumes in which they dis- grm"ul themselves at the exhibition at the riving park on the 80th ult. They ran very creditably, buv their costumes were sltogether too ‘‘raw” for this eulightened age, Now [fowa Postmaaters, WasnixoroN, May 21.—[Special Telegram to Tnr Bre.]—Towa postmasters appointed : P.
