* very alow of sale, and, in some cases, were THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS, | All Over the Country They Opened Soft and Lower. THE CASH MARKET HARDENS. July Wheat Holding Up in Chicago— Unfavorable Reports From Win- ter Wheat Distriots—Pork Held Considerably Highe CRICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS, Cnreaco, May 7.—[Special ‘Telogram to Tur Brr.]-~The signal service bu'letin, this morning, gave information of general light rains throughout the northwest, but not enough, as yet, to do much good. As Pills burg wired, later in the day, “Our low barometer is briuging us more wind than water.” Privato advices mentioned rain at many points in Dakota and Minnesota, but very few selling orders accompanied these dispatches, Usually this is the fault found with bull news about the crops, they seldom bring buying orders. Iut in this case it is the bears who are cautious, ‘They report rain, but do not act as though they thought thero had been rain enough. Nevertheless, the local market, and, for that matter, the markets all over the country opened soft and lower. July wheat started in at 78ic, and soid off to 7ilfe. This wa below yesterday's closing range. The was disposed to help the decline along, but the market was supported, and, in the ner- vous state existing, caution was the governing sentiment. It did not take much buying to start prices up again, and values 800n ot back to nearly where they were yesterday, especially long futures. May and June were strong on the understanding that buyers were standing around ready to take everything in sight at the slightest evidence on the part of holders to treat with them. As the day wore away the cash end of the market continued to harden, while late futures remained about stationary. ‘The closing quotation for May was sic; for June, 2ge, and for Ju As com. pared with yesterday, this shows a gain of 3ge in Muy, i{e in June and a loss of I{c in . After first decline, July worked up to which point was réached sevoral time during the session. Most of the business done was below 75i¢e, however, and it was not on a large scale. in fact it 'was exceed ingly light in volume most of the morning. The eyes of the traders were lifted to the skies, s it were, and if the expectations of rain are not verified to a greater extent than they have been, so far, operators will begin 10 take to their “eyclone cellars.” The up- favorable crop and weather news is not con- fined to the northwest. The winter wheat districts are sonding out bad reports of drouth and of discolored wheat fields, This discoloration may be the result of dry weather, or bugs, or both. Continucd heavy shipments and firmer feeling in forcign markets, with dry weather VTSI @IBYG gene prevailing, were in favor of the strength here, and the decrea: of 000 buskels in the auantity on ocean passage also contributed to support the market. ‘Ihere Was no activity, how branch of business, which was principally of cal scalping charac Inspection re- turns now show a continued improvement in grading, us will appear from o refercnce to the quantities given above. The market ruled steadily firm all_day, with occasional symutoms of uneasiness among the shorts, but not decided cnough to advance vri much. At the close the market was from 1o Lo higher than it closed yesterday. Oats were less active than _yesterday, though a fair to aggregate business was re- corded. 'The feeling was ensier in the main, especially in new crop delivery, which sold 3g@?;c lower. A prominent operator who Las been buying recently was, to-day, o sel- Jer and the reports of rain in the northwest 1 to depross prices. May sold down to touched 23} opening steady av 23%c, though th final small_improvement from bottom prices, Considerable May was sold in exchange for July at ter. The re- ccipts were liberal and the estimates for to- morrow, only moderate, while the outward movement continues large with more than 3:0,000 bushels withdrawn from store during the past two days. Oats to go to store sold at 2257c, or about X lowe! Tn provisions, yesterday's advance move- ment wes continued. Fortunately for the bull interest, the receipts of hogs " fell con- siderably short of the number predicted, und, us there was no particular desire 10 sell, the product ruled higher, without cre ing any particular stir. The upward me ment was also remarkably steady, and ut the adjournment pork showed a net appreciation for the day of 20c, lard of d@widge and short ribs of 10 X CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKEY in the speculative CuicaGo, May 7.—[Special Telegram to Tue Bgi|—CAtiLe--Business was slow, and, while a few choice light cattle sold at strong prices, heavy and common cattle were quoted lower.
