Last year I had a notion that I wanted to build a house in Beer's addition, 1 had four lots, fr nd clear, and 1 offered to give a mortigage on all of thew, and on the house, if 1 could get $1,200 of a loan with which to build, I couldn’t getit. This year 1 have been offercd money enough to put up @ house, and all that is wanted for security is & mortgago on the house and the one lot on which it stands. Judge Deemer yesterduy impanelled a jury nade ready to try the numerous cases of His honos sustained bis reputation of law, “‘busiuess is business.” He guve a short, P clean-cut address to the listening jurymen, He told them that he expected they would be oceapied in court most of the time for the next six weeks. He would have occasion from time to time to speak to them about several matters, but for the present there were two themes which he desired to speak upon briefly. The first of theso was concern- ing the use of intoxicating drinks. If there were any among the jurymen who were in the habit of indulging, he would warn them at the start that they must not indulge to any extent. He had been under the neces. sity lately of reversing two cases on account of the drunkenness of jurors, and he did not want to be under any such necessity again Another matter, to which he called special attention, was the necessity of the jurymen being in atten ce at ali hours when the court was 1n session. He did not want thom wandering about the city, loafing and hang- g about pleasure resorts. If any were ab- sent when wanted he should order the clerk to stop their pay. This warning will doubtless have the de- sired effect - - . Headqguarters tor builders’ hardware, Odell & Bryant, 513 Main street, - - . Real estate loans, F. J. City Council Proczedings. A special session of the city council was convened last evening to transact general business. In the absence of the mayor, Pro ent La presided. A full board ot aldermen, except Bellinger, was present. Minutes of vhe meetings since March 19 were read and approved. The reading took nearly two hours. The councilmen napped, the spectators went out for a walk, while the re- vorters slept the sleep of the just. Finally the books closed and everybody woke up. At 10 0'clock regular business was taken derman Billiuger came in. nof Judson and Jeffris for re- 1i tax on their agricuitural land, other than as farmivg land tax, was re- ferred. The ordinance granting rights and privi- leges to an electric motor company was called ur by Alderman Everett, and on mo. tion it was passed to its third reading and defeated. A second ordinance, different in some essential particulars from the above, was then read and went over under the rules. AN The Prosecutor Not Ready. The case of the State vs McCampbell was called in Justice Barnett's court vesterday afternoon. The defendant was ready for trial, but Harris, the prosecuting witness on the part of the state, was not ready. The court dismissed the case and cl rris. The squire said this uacking out and leaving the state to pay the costs was altogether too common and proposed to put a stop to it. 5o he mude the prosccutor foot the bills. Harris took tnis method to secure more time. He filed another information charging the same offense as was alleged in the first one. No date has been fixed for the second case.
