The work on the new track had been hurriedly and imperfectly done, hut the atreet was effectuaily captured for that dis- tance and the work will be finished more leisurely. The new track extended east only to Twenty-fourth. On the latter street the pavement was torn up for 4 few rods north and soyth of Lake and a double street car line put in, most offectually shutting out all rivals. No other work was done on Lake either by the motor or street car company. On Sherman avenue the Motor company had tracks from Clark north to Grace and Clark pavement was torn up for a number of rods north of this, showing the direction in which the motor was heading. The work was no farther advanced than it was Mon- day, when Kj \\a\! stopped by the injunction granted by Judge Doane. At tho corner of Seventeenth and Grace strects a gang of workmen were connecting with the Seventeenth strect track the line that is to go up Sherman avenue via Grace, The work was being done carefully and well, as though the track up Snerman ave- nue was an assured thing. It was rumored that the Cable company in- tended to head off the Motor company runming in_a line from Centar or Locus! north on Sherman avenue. These strect however, were the same as usual and showed that at least the work bad not been com- menced. It was reported that gesterlay alarge gang of men commenced to excavate for the new motor power house on the southwest corner of Nicholas and Twenty-second streets, but Dr. Mercer appeared on the scene and ordered all work discontinued for the present. Humphrey Moynihan, now of Chicago, has arrived, having been summoned as a witness in the Berghoff case, which is expected to come off to-day. It was Monyihan W arrested the accused after a chase of twenty- one days. Berghoft was tracked to a num- ber of places, one of the last of which was Centroville, Dak. He had left there and goneto Michigan whither he was followed by the detective, The latter was accompan- ied by acouple of Pinkerton men and learned that the fellow had gone toa place called Centerville, also. While on the train, goin to the latter place, another train passed and Moynihan remarked that hethought he suw in it a man who corresponded with the de- scription given of Berghoff. However, Cen- terville was reached and it was discovered that Berghoff Lad been there and left. The detectives burriedly returned to Niles, where Moynihan telegraphed to Pinkerton 1n_Chi- cago. One of the latter’s men nabbed Berg- hoff as he was disembarking from the Micli- gau train at the Twenty-second street depot, Woodruff Granite Qaarry. A citizen makes the following complaint whicn in some instances is well founded: “It seems to me that something should be done to remedy the habit loafers have of hanging around street corners. Last Satur- day afternoon it was almost ympossible to get through the crowd of men lounging at the corner of Fifteenth and Farnam, and this isonly a sample of an every day oceur- rence. ©A lady can scarcely walk Farnam street on a fine afternoon without being run into by half drunken men or dodging crowds who wmsist on standing in the center of the walk. “This is a disgrace that Omaha should wipe out at once. In large cities the police are instructed to keep peopfe on the move and it should be so here.” Do not throw away your hard earncd cash tor every new cough syrup, when that stand- ard remedy for coughs, Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup, is 95 cents. “Hurrah 1" said a little girl, “I'm not to bo kept in because of that horrid neuralgia. Now that Martin is captured, Davault has the face to ask Officer Savage to accept n paltry € for his reward stead of £100. This is the second time that an Omaha officer has recgntly been cheated out of his just reward, the other instance being when Pete Barrett, who is to be hung next Friday, was arrested by Captain Cor- mack and Ofcer Turnbull on the charge of murder, the pseudo-detective from Minnoap- olis to whom the Omaha officers delivered the prisoner, recelving the $2,200 reward of- fered for the capture. ek S There are nineteen metals more valun- ble than gold, but noremedy which will compare with Bigelow’s Positive Cure for coughs and colds. Chief Seavey has received reports from Chicago ard Cincinnati showing the number of arrests and convictions during the year in those cities and the result is that Omaha av- erages well with them, In Cincinnati 16,530 arrests were made in one year, and of this number 7,584 persons were convicted, the percentage of convictions being about 47 in 100, In Chicago there were 50,432 arrests, and 15,348 convictions, or about 30 per cent of the arrests. In Omaha the chief says taat 40 per cent of the arrests resulted in convic- tions. Thus Omaha makes a better showing than Chicago by 10 per cent, and lacks only 7per cent of making as many convictions as Cmcinnati. Added to this is the fact that both Chicago and Cincinnati have all the patrolmen necessary, while Omata is scantily supplied; for this reason it is hard he residence of the ! to convict most of the drunks and vags ar- rested here at night, as the officor who made the arrest is asleep at the time of the hear- ing of the case before the police judge. In the other citics there are sufficient mon on the forces to take the place of any oficer who has to appear in court during his hours of rest, thereby enabling him to get a proper amount of sleep each day. In Omaha if an ofticer on duty at night makes an arrest he has to moke his appearance in court during the day to testify, and yet report for duty at 7 p. m. just the same. Wm. At the council meeting last night Council- man Kaspar introduced an_ordinance calling for the repeal of Section 21 of Cl vised rules, which calls for the closing of saloons at midnight.
