ELLIS Architect, RAN THE GANTLET, Tramps Compelled to Travel a Very Rocky Road. ANDERSON, Ind., March 19.—(Special Tel- egram to Tue Bre.|—For several day village has been pestered with a band of tramps, and last night the men of the town determined to give them an escort out. Last night eight of them were found at the depot. Thirty or forty villagers, headed by the marshal, armed themselves with stout staves and formed a gantlet line along tha railroad track out of lown. Between these lines the tramps were compelled to run, one at a vime, their speed being accelerated by blows well laid on. The vagabonds wera unmercifully whipped, biood trickling from some of thein when they reached tho end of the line. They were then allowed to. go with & warning that if they came baok they would be souscd into the river. A Boom at Long Pine. Loxe PiNk, Neb, March 16.—(Special Correspondence of Tur Bre.|—With the opening of spring the people in this part of the state are taking new courage. The farmers have nearly all of their wheat sown, and are plowiug for oats, barley and corn. A much-larger acreage of wheat is sown thun last year. Trade is much improved in this place. Building operations Lave re- ceived an impetus not surpussed by any previous year. George A. Smith. having been appointed postmaster under the new administration, has commenced the erection of a twosstory brick—25x60 feet. The first fioor weiliby fitted up for the finest postofiice west of Fremont, while the second story will be fivted up as a hall for the Masons and Odd- fellows. The Long Pine hotel is being doubled in size in order to furnish accommo- dations for its increasing patronage. « Sev- eral new residences are being erected in town, and some in the country. The Catholie church society has decided to erect a church building this summer. In the manufacturing line the latest yen- ture is the establishment of a brick yard, there being an abundance of fine clay: here for that purpose. Parties are here who are investigating the profitableness of manufac- turing artificial stone, and if o sufficient d posit of clean cut sand can be found, they will probably make the veature. The movement of real estate 18 more acfiva than in any previous year. Twenty thousand dollars’ worth is reported to have chunged . bands during the past two weeks, while otber large deais are in course of consumma- 1 In consequence of this the price of real property is very much stiffened. The rumor that the B. & M. has decided to make its crossing of the Fremot, Klkhorn & Mis. = souri Valley at this place has caused much - excitement here within the past few days. The building of a §25,000 hotel on the heavily timbered stream at this place, in close proximity to the beautiful grounds of the Long Pine Chautauqua, has been revived and is being backea by assurances that it will be a realized fact in the near future. The executive board of the Long Pine Chaus tauqua beld a long session last weelk to com. plete plans for the coming session to be held 27 | from July 18 to 20, Rey. Dr. Martin, the president, was present at the meetiug and was very enthusiastic over the prospects of the 1550 assembly.
