Jumes Betts, one of the prisoners now con- fined in the county jail for highway robbery at Oukland, was a government prisoner here about two hours, a few months ago. Gleeson yesterday, for obstructing the sidewalk in the southeastern part of the city by piling up wood. At the institution for the deaf and dumb there was a merry time last evening. An entertainment was given in the chapel, con- sisting of carols, a hat drill, tableaux, recita- tions and shadow pictures. A" Christn tree bore bountifully, and games and refresh- ments delighted the pupils. Numerous gifts were also distributed. The local expressmen are nearly worked to death with the tremendous rush of Christmas business. At the close of the services at the Berean Baptist church Sunday morniug, it was unanimously voted to submit & petition to the clty council, asking for the suppression of all saloons, ganibling houses und places of vicious entertainment, and the rigid enforcement of the law. The petition was filed with the city clork yesterday morning. It was signed by Rev. T, K. Thickstuu, pastor of the church, Joseph Munger was arrested yesterday af- ornoon in response to & telegram from 3oone, for obtaining money under false pre tenses. Munger is an engincer,and is charged with securing money belonging to another enginoer of the same name who was killed a short time since o the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley railroad, Officors from Roone arrived in the city last evening and took the prisoncr away with them. At the Broadway Methodist church the programme embraced both vocal and literary numbers, many of them of & high order of excellence. The upright ladders were surmounted by a third, which formed an arch over the pulpit. Theso wero handsomely decorated with ever- greens, holly, ete., and upon them were a rayed the gifts for the little folks, It was a children’s entertamment and being success- fully presented, it was very much enjoyed. The *Waifs Christmas,” a pleasing can. tata for little folks, was presonted at the Congregational chureh by thirty children of the Sunday School. The vocalists did splendidly and furnished an hour of genuino eujoyment to their parents and friends. Following this an_hour was spent in making the scholars happy in the acceptance of numerous gifts, The entertainment began at 6 o'clock and two hours of healthy enjoy ment was given both young and old. At the Presbyterian church the children of the Sunday School gathered early in tho evening. They were taken in hand by their teachers and adult friends and given an evening of pleasure. ‘The new Sunday school room was opened and the gifts of Santa Claus were passed to the childron. All of theso exercises were witnessod by large audiences and the events wero very succossful. J. The city cleaned the streats during the summer while the dirt wagons were run ning to renew the disagreeable covering, but nothing of the kiud has been done for some time. Judge Ayles- worth was made the recipient of a handsome crayon portrait of himself, elegantly framed, The portrait was the work of Al Rothery, a well-known Omaha artist, and is a credit to his artistic ability. The picture was present- ed by Mr, Seabrook, in behalf of Mr. Roth- [ in a few felicitous remarks, to which the Judge responded most happily.
