He was near the institution for the deaf and dumb, when his horses be came frightened at two men who were sawing alog by the side of the road with a crosscut saw. After the horses had run a short distanca he was thrown out by the upsetting of tha wagon,. which par tially fell on him. ‘The horses stopped of their own accord a littie farther on. A team was sccured at the institution, and the un- fortunate man brought to this city, and left at the Kiel hotel. Drs. Lacey and Taomas were called to attend bhim. It was found that bis right leg was broken about thres inchies below the knee, and there were se eral slight external bruises. The fracture was reduced, after chloroforming the patient, who was suffering iutense pain. Last even ing be was resting as comfortably as could be expected. The Work of th» Fire Lads, About 1 o'clock yesterday morning the de partment was called out by an alarm from Middle Broadway, where flames w dis od issuing from No. 533, occupie g store by Durlin Bros. The fire at the driving park calls forth some criticism. Of course the department was nob at fault for not being able to get water, but it scems rather risky to send the whole department, and ¢ bit of appa- ratus, clear to the driving park, and keepin them there, leaving the city entively unpro- While the department was thus so u the business portion of the city, a fire might have broken out. By the time a portion of the department could have been sent back, the chances are that mmuch greater damage would be caused by delay at the see- ond fire than the total loss at the driving park. It secms that only a great emergency should justify the leaviny of the heart of the city wholly unprotected. 222 = Mcerschaum Goods.
