THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS, Wheat Trade Assumes a Holiday Character, CORN SOMEWHAT LIVELIER. Provisions On the Quiect Order, But Gaining - Cattle Demand More Active-Hogs Rake a Sudden Drop. OHICAGO PRODUCE MARKET, *micaeo, Dee. 18.—{Special Telegram to Tae Bee.|—The wheat market has failen into dull lines. Leading longs, representing aggregated holdings of possibly 20,000 bush els, continue to “‘stand ' The pastime of “milking the market,” which has been more or less profitably cngaged in of late, 1s becom ing less attractive, within the narrow range now prevailing, and scalpers and operators in general are scemingly anxious for a de cided movement, up or down, as being tho only thing that will infuse genuine life into trade. To employ & time-honored phrase that has been trotted out from time immemo- rial, about this date, has assumed @ holiday That 1t will stay state of quietude until after the holiday sea- son, docs not follow necessarily, yet the gen erality of traders appear to think that such will be the case, and they do not look for any great change in the immediate futu Opinions a8 to the ultimate course of values are seldom more radically at variance than now. The bears believe firmly that there are big reserves in the country available for flour manufacture, and the bulls, while ad mitting that the stocks of flour may be large, point to the fact t the stocks in sight amount in re Yy to less than two weeks' domestic consumption re quirements and that there is @ daily change for the better going on in the flour trade. This, according to their way of thinking, goes to prove that consumption is aguin catehing up with production. The ad- ditional fact is advanced that farmers’ deliv eries of wheat, winter and spring, have fal- len oft to almost nothing, thus making it tain that the visible stocks of wheat are about their maximum. The millers’ cony tion now in session in Milwaukee, seems to have heen called more with the view to ud vertise the alleged big stocks of flour, and to depress the wheat market, than to enter into any combination. 1 the millers had been short of wheat for milling purposes, and desirous of laying in supplies at_cheaper figures, they could not well have hit upon @ happier plan of accomplishing their object than in publicly calling a convention to discuss the policy of “eurtailing production until supplies were re- duced to reasonable limits.’ However, leaving this convention of millers out of the question, the situation cannot be said to be more favorable to the bears than it has been atan time for months, it is, on the contrary according to the bullish view y display no sigus of weakening ulland rather easier, and the domestic markets very generally followed the leaa of Chicago, opening weak and uct- ing_indecisively for a couple of hours, and then advancing and closing strong. The local market opencd with the sules for May deliv- ery ut $1.10@1.10){. Prices worked down to £1.095, with very little business at inside figures, It then advanced to £1.10%, declined 10 8110, ranged at $1.10%@1.10% for quite a time, and from $1.10% advanced rapidly to €1.108¢, closing at $1.10%, or 1dentically the same figure as on yesterd Trade was of small volume and largely local. More business was done during the last half hour of the session than at any previous hour of trading, The last rally was occasioned principally by the covering by shorts. There Was at no time any pressure of property on the market, and towards the end scalpers got excited over the circulation of the reports tending to show a decided and general im- provement in the flour trade. It did not take them long to run prices up on themselyes. The range on near mouths was_as follows: December opened at #1.0414, sold up to $1.043¢ nominal, and closed at §1.04}f. January sold up from §1.05@1.05}¢ and closed at the outside. » A change came over the spirit of the corn crowd to-day, and from the lowest depths of the heavy and declining market there was a notable and sensible reaction. The continuously poor grading: of the daily receipts is at length becoming so marked s to cause the short sellers to pause, and upon looking around to-day they seemed to con- clude that any effort to cover the sales in which good profits existed, would only be in the direction of reasonablé caution. The re- ceipts wore nearly 70 curs under yosterday's estimates, and for to-morrow 268 cars were estimated. The receipts and the latter fact waus the first thing to produce the changes of sentiment referred to. Cables quoted a fractional reduction in_prices at Liverpool, but indicated a good demand to exist at the decline. Out of 531 cars to-day only twenty-nine graded into contract quality. This, of course, was only in continuation of the many such re- turns récently, but it appears to strike the ators with more than usual force The opening was weal at about ) day’s closing prices, 10 a shade low aftor selling to the lowest point yet touched the reaction was lively and the market was highest at the end. January, which opened at 83%/@37cc, sold to 843%c Whero it closed, and My, after selling early at 368¢c, sold up 10 87%c, where it stood at 1:15 p. m. There was more business and it was more g nerally Qistributed than has lately been the case. The provision trade was somewhat on the uiet order. The bear element made no open lemonstration on the market. Outside or- ders of all kinds were limited, and with the neral run of operators tho conservative ling curtailed trading. Business was un- v the avorage volume, and yet a_stronger undertone existed and @ portion of yester- day's severo break was recoverod. In pork closings showed an actual advar.ce of 10@15c, in lard of 7i{@l0c, and i short ribs of 23 Cash lard sold fairly ut 5,10, but at the close was quoted at §5. Green hams averaging 16 1bs, changed hands at 85, and long and short cloar sides, boxed, at 7ic. The movement on cash meats was only moderate for this scason. Tho receipts of logs were again under speculation, Spec- ulative interest in products was confined to January and May. ‘The latter month ranged ata promium over January of 83@40c on pork, 5@igc on lard, and 15¢ on short ribs, CHICAGO LIVE STOOR Cnicaao, Dee. 18.—[Special Telegram to Tug Beg. | —CATTLE—The demand was rather more active ttan yesterday, and the general market showing was better, Yet values aro 85 to 30c lower than last weels and are liablo to remain 0 for the remainder of this week and perbaps until after New Years. Drossed beef operators are just now neither steady nor reliable buyers, their branch of trade during these holiday times having to meet the scasonable dewand for poultry, which is always abundant and cheap long about Christmas. There was a light inquiry for heavy steers. The run of Texaus was moder- ate, the bulk of which sold at steady rices as compared with yesterday. The ight run of Texans helped salesmen to get better prices on their best cows and heifers, el thero was no substantial advance, and one is likely to follow until Texans stop coming, and thut desirable incident is not lkely to take place for some time yet. Old ©ows and canning stock are about ‘us low as 8t any time. Straggling lots of common Tangers w0 yet coming to mar- ket. Business in the stocker and feoder Muo was again quict. Toxas cattle unchanged; steers, $2.3 cows, §1.75@2.50; thin Colorado, $2.40( B Hoas—Something akin to a panic seemed to strike the murket this morning and there Was & straigh wlla the bulk of the seiling at that decline, Just wby this came about mo one seemed to kuow, but the drop was there in all it unpleasantuess. The run shows a falling off of 1,300 in two d as compared with the same time last we and prices to-day were about the same as ¢ Saturday last. The outlook now fs that there Wil be less th last week, instead _of large increase ox- pected. During the raid this morning rough and common sold down to #4.0525,03, nd best packers at §5.1065.15, the out ng in the bulk sold, Best Heavy sold .17 1 nd one or tw ots at which report closed. Light sorts were in fair mand and sold largely at #5.15 for averages of 100 1bs and down, the Fowlers and Moran & Healy filling in at that price. The Lipton company paid #5920 for averages of 170 [bs on the singe order, and Joe Nash .1 light-light sorts, 120 to 130-1b Large lots of undesirable Spocial Telegram to Tie Bee.)-Srocks-The stock market opened tame at slight concessions from last night's closing prices. The strength and animation shown yesterday seemed to have disapueared. London was apparently taking advantage of yesterday's bulge in prices to gotrid of surplus stock, and does not seem 10 evince any disposition to take part in the bull market here for the present al least Room traders who had gone home with long stocks on their hands last night were in the market as scllers this morning, and the mar- ket during the first hour gradually receded, although the losses were insignificant, ex cept Richmond and West Point preferred, which lost 1}, and Rock Island 1 per cent. Houses with Chicago councctions that we active buyers of grangers yesterday werc selling on all rallies, and it is freely talked that the advance of yesterday was gotten up by prominent bears here for the purpose of putting out a fresh line of shorts at better prices. Philadelphi been buying Read- ing rather extensively for some days past, and shorts took fright at the firmness of the general market, and went into cover, thus pushing the price up on themselves. At noon the market was dull aund steady at a shade better than the lowest prices. Tele graphic communication with the west is seri ously interrupted to-day owing to the heavy floods in the Mohawlk valley, and the pro- ceedings of the meeting at Chicago are ve mea 1t is generally thought, how that the meeting will be a harmonious one, and that rates will be advanced all around, taking effect January 1. The market during the afternoon was dull and without special feature. Grangers were weals, while coalers were well sustained. Friends of Lacka- wanna say the pool in that stock is still intact, and no immediate liquidation need be looked for, and as soon ws the market shows signs of hardening the stock will sell above 140.
