Hayden Bros - We rei Burglarious Recruits. Last Saturday night the house of Sergeant Rivers, at Fort Omaha, was entered by some men, who made off with a fow of his effects. Sunday night a fow minutes after 12, while effecting an entrance to the house of Cor- poral Fox, Mrs. Fox was awakened and the thieves were disappointed. Shortly after 1 o'clock they entered the quarters of ex-Ser- geant Bauers, who is now cmployed as ma ket man for the post. In the same quarters is the mail man, Lazarus, Both men daily are entrusted with sums of money by the ofticers for payiug bills in town and for other purposes, Bauer was awakened just as the thief was making for the door with his arms full of pantsand coats. He rushed outside, but was met by two men, whom he rccog’ nized as soldiers, and who ordered hiw to re- turn to the house or they would shoot. Bauer entered the house and searched for a revolver, which was also gone. Lazarus dis- covered that all his clothing had been carried off, and_throwing on & buffalo coat gave chase. He captured one man hiding near the craek back of the stubles, and marched him to the guard house. The hames of the perpetrators are Burke and Murphy. The lat- ter deserted yesterday morning, thus adding the crime of desertion to that of an attempted burglary, = All the valuables were regained. Both men are recruits. To Prevent Croup, True croup never comes without a warning; a day or two before the at- tack the child becomes hoarse, and that symptom is soon followed by a pl,l.ulml, rough cough, If Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy is given as soon as this hoarse- ness or cough appears, all danger and anxiety may be avoided; it has never failed, even in the most severe cuses. There 18 no danger in giving the Rem- edy for it contains noinjurioussubstance. Bold by all druggists. e The Legislative Contest. The lawyers engaged in taking testimony in the legislative election contests, assembled again yesterday morning at the city hall, but after a brief discussion of the status of the case, ajourned until this morning. They have a large number of witnesseés yet to ex- amine. The republican contestants seemed quite elated with what has thus far been unearthed, and assert that sufficient fraud has been developed in two precincts, to justify the votes being thrown oyt, which action would give the contestants their seats. The democratic contestees claim that no fraud, but a good deal of irregularity has been dug up, but not of such a character as to hazard their chances of occupying the seats to which they were elected. ‘It would be an interest- ing thing,” observed @ gentleman who is taking a deep interest in the contest *‘to the honest citizens of Omaha who believe in an honest election and fair count, to know just rhhmodcmwrau definition of Irregular- I non-compliance with every provi- rnloll of the luw governing elections, if knock- g 8 judge down and scattering the ballots nholluho room, lnd the promiscuous . \m.lng of residenta o of ofhor wards, Is buta venia Oflellfi under the gencral lmflulurluu. it is high time the b{c slature enlightened us upon the meaning the word- fuud and crime, Yes sir, “he l)lN\IM th emphasis,” there bas been enough raseality developed already to enti- tle every republican contestant to the seat he has been defrauded out of.” — An Absolute Cure. The Grand Jury's Investigation The United States grand jury convened at 10 o'clock yesterday morning and resumed their search for election frauds. A query was put to Assistant United States Attorney Patrick as to when he thought culmination of the jury’s labors would be r 1, and he re- plied that that was one of the things that no fellow could find out. There are now sub. paenas out for forty additional witnesses, and many more than those arc apt to be called unless something material is unexpectedly developed, which is very likely to occur at any moment.
