DECEMBER 15 IRREGULAR RETURNS, Their Story is Again Told inthe Legis Iative Investigation The investigation of alleged election frauds in the Mgislative contest is still being vigor | ously prosecuted at the city council chamber. The investigation has clearly shown that in the Second district of the First ward the | judges and clerks failed to make any return r to the board of canvassors, ther g mothing fn the poll-book returned b them save a list of the names of those who voted n that district The only thing the board of canvassers | hud to base their canvass ubon was the 1wo tally-sheet « ¢ materially disagreed s 1o the totals, J lists véere not certi: fied to, and there was nothing to show that the board of election had t ath | scribed by law. Again, v exception of a few familiar names ¢ tally-she of persons running for procinct offices, w would not know whether they came from , | the First or Third wards, The evidence shows that the Dballots vere thrown into the box in promiseuous manner, not _even being strung, lot alone scaled. For Mr. Gustus it was shown that he served s one of the clerks of the election board in this district sev I‘l\ hours during tie absenca of one of the r ular clerks. Mr. Gustus is a democrat lrn not a resident of this precinet, nor was he :-\-'«h'xl to this position or took h of It has also been shown that in the I u mmnn-m,. Second ward no less than N fTe persons served on during the progress the clection and the can- vas of the rcturns, some of them being sworn in_and others not. Any member of this board seemed to absent himself from his duties whe h 1t inclined or saw tit to do so. After the votes were received and the polls closed, the board proceeded to canvas the returns’ and, at the' compietion of the first count, a discrepancy was_discovered of over two hundred votes. This fact not only suggested the advisability of taking a sccond count, but » ion por- nptory ot aside as in ho second count was procoeded with until it was almost. come pleted, when it was discovered that the re- publicans were gaining over the first count. Betore that time a man named Mulvihill got mto a dispute_ with _one of the members of the board, u Mr. Holmes, and knocked him off his chair. Mulvihill was an outsider. In the scramble that ensued the tickets were thrown from the tables and scattered about the room. This, of course, undid _all that had been dore on the second count, and necessituted a third. The board, however, v thoroughly fatigued and concluded not to proceod farther with the count, They added to MeShane's vote about 145, as returnca on tho first count which was set aside as incorrect, These 145 votes for McShane were on scattered republican tickets, and no republican candidate received the benefit of this discovery, and with this > in the first tally list, the report was signed by the board and sent to the county lerk, ILwas siown by witnesses Lecder 1d, that they overheard a cony tion in an outbuilding near McShan 1 on Wednesday or Thursday after the election, whercin it asserted that some of the tickets had taken by two of the parties to_the con tion when ouly one was to take the tic One of these men said that if Donnel there the matter conld be fixed up all but that he was at home, and that one b of these tickets must be gotten even if there had to e arow about it. It1s of red paper and consists of two round designs, cuch beuring a shield outlined in gold. These are connected by a band about an inch and a half in width, On these several parts are the words: “‘Cigar Manufacturers of Omaba. 8. The circular states that the object of the move is to encourage Omahans to buy Omaha cigars which, it is claimed, are as good, or may, with sufticient encouragement, be made as good as any in the world, If this patronage were to be practiced, Omala would be bene- fited, because she could give employment possibly to 1,000 skilled mechunics, whereas now she employs but eighty-five. ‘There is a large numnber of people in this community who have already expressed tuemselves in favor of she suggestion, and will ¢ with a view of helping Omaha. ——— Vestibuled Train to Washington, The only vestibuled train from Chi- cago to Washington is run via B. & 0.
