Soon after the moch at Fitzger- ald’s brick yard was started this morn- ing one of the employes, named Daniel Burke, was caught in the shafting and instantly Killed, The speed of the en- gine had just been started. It had not renched over forty revolutions per min- ute at the time'the terrible accident happened. The unfortunate young man was as- sisting one of the other hands in shift- ing a belt on the second foor, wheve all the shafting is placed. A belt had heen thrown off, but the rope used to bold it away from the shaft to prevent w was tungled and the other man w for u new piece, leaving Burke to hold the rope. In some way it became wound around his wrist and caught in the turning shaft, and he was jerked from his feet and whirled into the air. Be- tween the floor and the shaft the space was uot more than twelve inches, and the unfortunate fellow was drawn through this several times before the muchinery could be stopped. As soon as possible Burke was extri- cated, but a gasp, a quivering breath, and his spirit departed the tenewment of cliny. The revolutions of the engine injured him tervibly. Ouo side of his head was a great, bloody bruise; his right arm was broken between the wrist and elbowand twisted entirely off; several ribs were fractured and his left ors in leg broken, The coroner was immediately notified #nd went to the scene of the accident. Ho considered an inquest unnecessary, but took the statement of thoso who witnessed the tragedy. The body of the oung wan was then taken to'the un- dertake room and prepared for burvial, The funeral will probably be held Sun- day, under the auspices of the Ancient Ovrdor of Hiberninng.
