OPINIONS ON THE COUNT. In answer to queries as to what_effect the ivregularitios in the election returns, as shown abovo, would have on the result of the election, the following opinions were ob- tained Major Furay 11, sir, the board is doing its best, and coutest or no contest, the board cannot be blamed for any irregularities that 1wy oocur in the returns. In order to get to Edinburgh in, eight hours the North- western Railway, company ran to Crewe (1584 miles). in 178 minutes without a stop, the longest run ever made in the world; the twocompanies between them covered 400 miles in nineteen minutes less than the advertised time, the fast- est long run ‘e made in the world and the Caledonian crowned the whole by running the 100F miles from Carlisle to Edinburgh, includihg ten cou tive miles of one in eighty, in 104 mirutes, which was probably the most remarkable performance of the three. Next day the Northwestern, not to be beaten by the ('aledonian, did its ninety miles from Preston to Car- lisle, including a_thirty-mile climb up the Cumbrian Fells, in exactly ninety minute: Two months earlier the same train was allowed 127 minutes for the same distance.
