Oregon lawyors are busy with law suits between swamp owners and cattlos men in regard 10 the boundaries of core tain sections of land. The editor of the Portland Oregonian in speaking on this subject shows how the boundaries in the lake districtsare continually chang- ing. He says: \\'m‘m'rt\lm. in Sovuiheastorn Oro- gon is a shallow body of water eovering alarge amount of land. It is divided by low ridges of laud inte three ov four divisions. Last year a gentloman cruis- fug through that country found ono of tho divisions to be a lake eight mile long and four miles wide, and from four to five feet deep. This summer the ame gentliman visited that section and | found this lake totally dry and drove his team across it without trouble, He is now prepared to swear that the site on the lake is suitable for cultivation, whereas last year he would have sworn witha clear conscience that there wos a luke there. “*Last yoar Mr. Noil had a contract to make o survey of the meander line of Warner lake, which he did, and shis year My, Martin, & government inspee- r of surveys, visited Warner luke to poct the surveying done by Mr. Neil. in He found the work all right, but it did not conform to the water line in that part of the lake abeve mentioned. “*Responsible parties who were at the lake when Mr. Neil made his meander, canfirmed its truthfulness as to the water line when it was made, and Mr. Martin became convineed by their testi- mony that a wonderful change had taken place. *“The probable cause of the disappoar- ance of this large body of water is the light fall of snow in that section for several years past, as all the lakes in that section are lower than ever before since the settloment of the country. “It will hardly be safe to settle on the bottom of n dried up lake or close to low-water mark, as in case of along, hard winter, with a great fall of snow and late rains in the spring. these lakes will likely expand themselves to. their originai siz [he fact that the lakes in that see- tion are of this character is probably the cause of all the trouble and mis- understanding in vegard to swamp lands.” Electric Light Carbons. ‘“Nhere are all the carbons made that are burned daily in the electric lights in use throughont the Unitea atos?’ asked a New York Mail and press reporter of the president of one of the leading light companics in this country the other day. “Two-thirds of them,” he replied, “are manufactured Cloveland, O. There are, according to the latest sta- tistics, about 150 tons in daily consump- tion, and out of that number a shade over 100 tons are turned out in the twenty carbon furnaces in Cleveland. The capacity of an ordinary furnace is about 45000 ecarbons, but some of the manufacturers are now running over-time, so great has the demand grown. Six_years ago all the carbons throughout the country were made in a single room in Aoston, where only ten men werce employed. Carbons are made chiefly from the rosiduum of oil after it has been refined, and the deposit usu- ally found around the natural gas woll is also coming into general use, as it doos not sputter when made into ear- bons. The material is first ground into a powder, whon a littlo pitch is added and the whole mixed into a stiff batter, when it is run into molds. These are then packed into boxes and the latter laced in a furnace where they are sub- Jected to an intense heat. Carbons are now sold at $27 a thousand, with the prospect of an eatly increase in price. e Congressional Swallow Talls. Senator Chace, of R hode Island, wore in the senate chamber the other day & long, single-breasted frock coat. His usual dress is not, as has been said, & swallow-tail coat. His mostcommon at- tire is what is familiarly known as a shad belly coat, a garment which dif- fers as much from a swallow-tailed ar- ticle, so-called, as the double-breasted frock coat differs from the cutaway. The swallow-tailed coat disappeared from the senate chamber when Senator Conger retired. Senator Chace's cont is a Quaker garment. This is tho most pronounced outward forfof Mr. Chace’s Quakerism. Occasionally he uses ‘‘thee’” and ‘‘thou” iu conversation, but ouly when he is growing very confidential. There is a peculiatity in Senator Dolph’s attiro that sometimes exoites eomment. It is his adherence to the old fashioned velvet collar. Semator Dolph’s customary attire includes a long-double breasted frock coat ‘of black, with a black velvet collar. It is very scldom nowadays that the volvet is seen, except on overcoats; and evéu in that body of old tashioned wen, the senate, Mr. Dolph has but one com- panion in peculinrity—Senator Wilson, of fowa. Mr. Wilson usually wears & double-breasted frock coat, hanging loosely unbuttoned, and the velvet col- lar is one of the most striking features of the garment. Nebraska National Bank, U.
