Yesterday morning the C., B, & Q. railway company put a large force of men at work ack from theend of their spur ewart's packing house toward the river, About there months ago the city coun- cil granted that corporation a right of way down first avenue on the south side of the Northwestern track, and the Rock Island a right of way along the same avenue on the north side. The Northwestern has had a track to the river along this avenue for sev. cral years, and the other companies, realiz ing that the extensive territory of the eastern bottoms would be specially occupied by lum- ber and coal yards, wholesale houses and munufacturing enterprises after the opening he new bridge, began casting about for i o that portion of the city us soon as they saw the bridge nearing completion. rhe Rock 1sland has thus far made no move to lay a track, but itis understood that this work will be commenced very shortly. The Northwestern is not disposed to allow the “Q" to enter its territory without being duly compensated, The former company has a from its rivertrack to the packing nd this spur track the “Q" must The Northwestern yesterday kept an Cross, inspecting it, to sce that all requirements have been complicd with, and that there is | €ngine and line of freight cars stand- 0o reason why the bonus voted by the city | ing on this track, and a should not be paid. Cascade Laundry < =5 _M——*—_—_—_—_——m 24 men busily empl evidently prep d in unloading m 1z to put in switches or sidetracks. There was no trouble over the uatter, for the “Q" men went around to the other side of the Northwestern train and con- tinued their labors. The work is being rushed and will be completed by to-morrow morning. [t i8 the opinion of railway oficials that the matter will be amicabiy adjusted us s00u as certain papers are signed. d a well known local ofticial yesterday, “The roads will all extend their” trucks 1o the river, or make traffic arrangoments with other lines that have tracks down there to do their hauling. There will undoubtedly be a vust amount of business done down the inside of the next year. The “Q and the Rock Island will both get their shure, and the Northwestern will nof be left out in the cold. The Milwsukee aud Union Pacitic will probably make arrangements to go down other streets if the council will grant a right of way. Omaha lumber yards and a number of other enterprises will ‘surely come across the bridge, as property on the west side of the river is altogether too'valuable to be oc- cupied by such plants. The roads ure not making this move for nothing. Inside of two years the whole distance between this city and Omaha will be buiit up solid, and Broadway real cstate will sell by the front foot, Nearly one thousund new buildings are already contemplated on the bottoms, and contracts are let for a large part of them,” “I teil you that the public generally has no idea of the vast amount of work that is laid out. Warchouses will go up, and these by th> dozen, and that is why the railroads are getting there with a rush, ~ Without a single exception, every wholesale implement touse in this city hus “bought lund down there for the ercction of new buildings. It means a great deal, and we all want a little of the cream.” The motor line management has made ar- rangements to_have tras run to the river on the duy of the bridge celebration, Octo- ber 0. The Northwestern has refused to do this, and it is surmised that the “'Q" is rushing its track through for that purpose. The ofticials of the road will vouchsafe no intormation concerning the matter, but this is the general supposition. The cars of the motor line will not begim to furnish trans- portation for the emormous crowds which will be in the city on Tuesday next, and this is the only way in which transportation can be provided. Mr. Alworth, of the Northwestern, states that the Rock Islana does not desire to build & track of its own, and nas joined with the “Q" in building a joint track. The North- western has always had a right of way there, and desires to put in switches and side tracks for the mauufacturing enter- prises to be estubhished there, The Burlington has covered the entire line by laying short stretches of track in numer- ous places, and will join them at their Jeisure. e See Forrest Smith’s special column. o ——— S. Chief McCracken, of the South Omaha police force, was in the Bluffs yesterday, trying to clear up the cloud, which the record of his part in the recent celebration here, caused to rest upon his fair name and fame. His statement of the affair was that he was in company with Al Garry, and Mr. and Mrs, Magee, of South Omaha. 'I'hey took a hack 0 go to the ball game in Omaha, and after the game rode over to the Bluffs to see the torchlight parade. They got into another hack, which was standing in front of the Turf saloon, and watched the procession. Soon three Council Bluffs persons climbed into the hack, and the whole party drove down to the Omaha There part got out, and the South naha quartet rode back to the place from whence they started wards the claim was made that M refused to pay for the hack, and Chief Lucas, of the Council Blu police, hunted him He disclaims owing the hack- ything, and declared that he had paid for everything he had ordered. The hackdriver corroberates this, and did not seem to know which one of the whole party was responsible for the extra hire.
