A History ofgCurious Spells and Love Charms. MATRIMONIAL FATES FORETOLD. Customs of th§ Mystic Night—Quota- tions From the Poet Gay and Other Authorities--Poer- inginto th -Ju'lluw'l-rn. All boys and girls know that next Wadnesday, Oet. 81, will be All Hallow Lve, though most of them corrupt its name to “Holly Eve.” They know it is a night of mirth and mystery specfally devoted to misehief, fun, incantatfous, divinations, charms and spells, but very fow of them understand its real signifi- cance, or can teil whenee it derives its name., It is many centuries since finding it impossible, and constantly the saints, Future. the chuech, from the great increasing multitude of to set apart a separate day for each onc, deerced that Nov. 1 should thenceforth be kept as aday in honor of all the saints and that it should be known as All Hollow Mass or All Saints’ Day, and that the night of Oct. 81, im- mediately preceding it, should thers- after be kept as a vigil and be known as All Hallow Eve, these occasions being still observed in the Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran churches. From its first origination Hallow Eve has been invested with a peculiarly mystic character. As there is nothing in the church celebration of the ensu- ing day of All Saints to justify these ideas and customs associated e, and as none of them In the north of Furope in all ages and countries Hallow Ev deemed the occasion par excellence for 1 the answer to that momentous question, which absorbsso large a share of the thoughts of romantic young men and maidens—who is to marry whom? The means employed to gain this much- desired information are as quaint and curious as they are mnnuu»us and varied. For this purpose y time and every country has lm(l its own charms and spells peculiar to itself, and they have furnished an almost inox- haustible theme to folk poets and com- pilers of folk-lore. Those of Scotlund have been most graphically aescribed by that groatest of all poets of the peopl Robert Burns. In his poem of *Halloween,” he has given ysa most vivid account of move than half a seore of hallow eve ° charms and spells peculiar to the Scottish peasantry. In a veryold hook called “Ye True I find the “If amaid would know ye name of y he is to marry let hor on All ITallow Even, steal out to a lime kiln and throw & clue of blue yarn, still holding to ye other end. Présently ye end in ye Kkijn will be sharply pulled Then ye maid, must say ‘who hola? w Iu‘u‘u]u)n ye voice of her future hus- vill prbnounce his name—hoth ye n and yo'sir name.’” The only to the successful performance is spall iy he, difficulty of finding an old lime kilp, Water, nuts ahd apples bear a promi. nent part in the spells and charms of Hallow Eve. A quaint old book of charms, puhlinhml in Edinburg in 1690, entitled *‘Old Father Times Bundle of Faggots Newly Bound Up,” declares that an infallible means of getting a view of yoar future husband and wife is to go to bed on Hallow Eve with a glass of water, in which a small sliver of wood has been placed, standing on a table by your bedside. In the night you will dream of falling from a_bridge intoa riverand of being rescued by your future wife or husband, whom you will see as distine ctly_ns though v with waking ey This charm is thus alluded to by thu nglish poet Ga; Last hallow eve I longed my love 1 e And tried u spell to call her up to me, With wood aud water standing by my side I dreamed a dream and saw my own sweet bride. In a folk-lore book m\lll,d ‘“Ye Mys- teries of ye Wytcheeraft,” which is the oldest in 1 collection, there is given a charm ‘‘By which a maid may know if ye man she loves be true.” To perform this the maid is directed to pluck at midnight on all hallow eve,two monthly roses with long stems, naming one for herself and the other for her lover. She must then go directly to her sleeping room without speaking to anyone, and kneeling beside her bed, must twine the stems of the two roses together and then repeat the following lines, mean- while gazing lntenlly upon the rose named for her lover: Twine, twine and intertwine. Let my love be wholly mine. If his love be kind and true, Deeper grow his rose's hue, If her swain be faithful, the color of the rose represchting him will grow darker and more intense. Arte to Reade the Futuve,” followin Of all the halloweve spells and charms associated with nuts, one of the oldest is that which pre- vails in some of England’s northern counties, and which is to the effect that if_a young man or woman will go at midnight on Hallow Eve to a walnut tree and walk around it three times, crying out each time “Let him (or her) that is to ] be my truelo ring me some walnuts,” the future wife or husband will be seen in the tree gathering its fruit. The poet Gay thus refers, in his “Pastorals,” to this custom: yLast Hallow Evo T sought a walnut troa I hopes that' I thy true love's face might see. Three times Hmllsd three times 1 walked apace, & Then in the mt‘ I saw my true iove's face,” A very nlm lmllow Eve divination, formerly mueh practiced by English rustics to tell frgm what quarter of the compass the fusure husband or wife will ¢, is_performed by stealing out un- observed at midnight, plucking a small lock of hair froswone’s head and casti it to the bredzes Whateverdirvection it is blown towardjis believed to be the location of the future matrimonial part- ner. This dininittion is also mentioned by Gay in his **Pastorals” as follows: “I pluck this lock of hair from out my head, To tell whence comes the one that I shall wed, Fly, silken hair, fly all the world around Until you reach the spot where my true love is found.” There can be no question that many of the observances of Hallow Eve are derived from those of the old Roman festival of Pomona, when divinations and the consulting of oracles and omens were universally pract e An AbsoluteaCure.
