THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: WED ESDAY OCTOBER 17, 1888, THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. A Oontinuance of the Downward Movement in Wheat. #0LD HUTCH" BUYING LIBERALLY Corn Rules Weaker—Oats Quict—Pro- vislons Suffer a Decline--CattleActs ive But Prices Unchanged— Hogs Lower—Quotations, CHICAGO PRODUCE MARKET. Ciiteaco, Oct. 10.—|Special Telegram to Tnr Bee |—The wheat market opened weak and lower on soft private cables and the pressureof long wheat. ‘There was no very large amount offered, but scattering orders came on the markot from every quarter at the same time, December opened at $1.10%¢ and May at $1.10%. The low point —§1.10%4 for December und §1.10 for May-—was reached very soon after the opening, and then, with- out any warning, the market started up, December going to §1.12' and May to $1.1214. December workea back to $1.105 and May took a position at a premium following De cember, lg@le. After this sccond re- uction the murket hung around $1.11@111Y for Decomber quite a while, but soon after 12 o'clock it again turned decisively and the best prices of the day were obtainable the last half hour of the trading session. De. cember by 12:45 was $1.125%, May $1.13} and the top was not reached until afterwards, The market was active early and late, the same as rsterd with @ very dull period intervening, The absence of the pelling ssurc was @ motable feature during most of the session, and by a good many the temper was misjudeed on that account, the opinion prevailing quite gener- ally that the only reason values did not fur- ther depreciate was for the simple reason hat there was littie property offering, and that it needed selling to produce a break ction, when it came, was from the other dircction. Wheat was wanted, and still there was little for sale. Outside mar: hets were generally steady and rather better, if anything. Scaboard markets are not now far removed from the export basis, and if foreigners want our wheat at anywhere near the prices prevailing at export points they will begiu to fecl for it soon. The situation Jooks more natural than it has for some time, have yet a consid th though primary marke! erable distance to go back or eastern mar- kets to go up before they get into line. A story which found belief today was in circulation to the ef fect that the market was raided by Fairbank and Hutchinson yesterday for the double purposc of disabusing the public mind of the idea that a corner 1n December was in 1on and also to enable Hutchinson rie line of May wheat, of which he und himself sho 'he fact that Hutchinson has been a free buyer of May on Jlor to this bit of gossip, and and swmiling front of the stalwart bulls under the rattling fire to which the market has been subjected was - wark. A further state ) s br early this morning were the “tailers,” have been “shaken out,” and that none of the princidal lines of long wheat have been disturbed or reduced. Information was also vouchsafed that the short interest in Deces ber is greater now than it was befo raid. On the other hand, the bears say that whatever may happen, the receipts of wheat up to the end of Decembér will b larwe and on a gradually increasing scale. The that the wh ers are holding ba a better grade and that the natural tendency of this future free movement will be to ki values down and prevent any more ‘‘cor- ners.”” These bits of talk are given for what they are worth representing opposing views on the subject of wheat values. wheat walked right along up to $1.1 Conselman led in the buyings, his_purchases for the day being put av 2,500,000 bushels. ‘This may or may not be for Hutchinson, but the crowd elected to believe that it was. Decomber rose to $1.1317. The whole list set- tled back somewhat from the extreme top, but the last quotations recorded an advance over 2¢ in near futures aud 314c in May. Corn started weak and lower at 43{c, November being !i¢ under yesterday's close and sold off sharply lg¢ more to 4215 rallying ut the latter point with an_improve- ment observable in wheat and working up gradually to ddc. strongest and mad tober and November closed i (@3¢ under terday’s prices. Closing quotations were; October 43c; November 431cc bid; December 40} ;¢ seller, and May 39'¢c bid. Oats opened fairly active with most of the trading in May, which was weak to 'cc lower carly and advanced to 20;c, ruling dull and quiet later with near months nearly un- changed, though tending to weaknes Posted receipts were greater than antic pated, including nearly 400 cars, and with arge quantities in sight and a general casi- ness clsewhere there was little disposition to put out new lines. No. 2 in_store was about Jgc lower at 24c with trading i cash lots Siefly by sample. In the provision market there was a little more doing. Not much increase was notice- able in outside tradibg but regular pit traders were more inclined to branch out, and as they were doubtless influenced in their course by orders to scll the tend of the movement was bearish. Early in the day the vrade was subjected to what might be construed us & mild raid and as a result prices were made to average and close lower than yesterday. The decline actually suf- fered amounted to 25¢ on October lard, on _October short ribs, 15¢ on Novemoer pork, 173¢c on Nevewber [\rd, il on De- cember, year and Junug® ard, 12¢ onyear and January pesdy, aod 8% ou January short Fibs, - —— CHICAGO LIVE STOCK, CmraGo, Oct. 16— [Special Telegram to Tie Bee | -Carrie.- Business was somewhat bet #or than yesterday, but there was little or no thange in values as compared with yesterday. X he only improvement was that buyers came d made better offers than yes- stern markets are fuli of beef and cattle, and until the surplus is worked off, both in the east and Chicago, there is little or no chance for improvement, So far this week there is only 1,000 less than the same time last week, from all accounts received the chances are that the run will be consider- ably less than last week. Should this prove correct the present pressure may be relieved, but there is slight chance for any great im- provement this week. The run of Texuns and rangers fell off to about 100 cars each, yet the rage sales were no better than yesterday, stive butchiers' selling about the same as last week. The demand for stocke d feeders continues fair and prices steady.
