The number of cases of typhoid fever in the city and the mortality which has attended them, together with comments of the people which the disease has oc- casioned, demands more than a passing attention at this time. It should be un- derstood,” said a physician® yesterday, “‘that these cases are of a sporadic nature, and have not assumed a con- tagious form. Thisindicates that cer- tain purely local conditions, existing in ity where the disease manifests are the prime cause of it. True, they occur in different portions of the city, no part seemingly being free from them, but it is also true (which state- ment the testimony of other physicians will corroborate) that the sections which are in the most cleanly condition have the fewest cases.” “Some well meaning personswho have sought for a cause of the appearance of the disease have charged it upon a defective and ill-managed sewerage system,” said a certain alderman. his is not true. The system itsell is one of the best in the world, and at no time in the history of the city has it been in better condition than at pre ent. Until the permanent main sewer is laid temporary outlets are run into Indian creek, but the sewers are flushed every few days, and an examination of these outleis shows them to have scarcely the trace of a disagreeable odor. So the difficulty is not here. It is nearer home.” “There are three potent causes,” said another physician. *The filthy condition of the city and a lack of com- petent scavengering; the lack of pri- vate sewer connections, which makes some other disposition of filth necessary; and the rank growth ol vegetation weeds, ete., which burdens the entire unoccupied YUI[IOII of the city. Let anyone spend an hour looking about. See the streets, Dirt, dirt everywhere. On North Main street within u half block of Broadway a pool of filthy water, covered with a green scum, and many other places in a similar condi- tion. Visit the alleys within a stone’s throw of Broadway. They should be clean, but are they? Those connecting Main and Fourth streets; that connect- ing Main and Bryant, and through to First street; that running parallel with Main, between that and Fourth; these are examples of the condition’ of the alleys of the entire eity. Old privy vaults are allowed to be covered up without cleaning. Wells are dug with- in ten feet of these holes, and the water is used by many families; all kinds of garbage is duu\\)ud ever except where it should be. Thése are some of the things for which the people themselves are |'u~|»on~|blc “The seems to be a ver; disposition on the part of citi avoid using the sewers, The m laid and the people are paving for them, but they will not make their house con- nections. This is the worst form of economy; one in which a few dollars IH placed against health and life itself. if you are pumping me for publica- bu cannot put the matter too snun;_'l\. Why there are hundreds of acresof them about the city, and when they decay the poison which they have absorbed dur- ing the summer passes again into the atmosphere, Knowing these things as I do, I am surprised that there are not more cases of these diseases than there are.” Said another alderman: ‘‘We have secured a first class man who will here- after do the scavenger work of the city. But that will not wholly remedy the evil, Every man and woman in the city must make the matter ot the city’s cleanliness a personal matter. Let each one see that his premises and property are kept congtantly fn a healthy condi- tion, Mhen this question will largely settle itself, for theve will be very little left for the marshal, thu scavenger or any one else to un.uul to.” general Sl.op at Ihe Bechtele. e R For bargains in real estate sce E. Despite the evident anxiety of the Council Bluffs department of the Re- publican to hush up all talk-about the outrageous gas monopoly of the city, the I matter is being thoroughly ventilated A\ and it is probable that the people of Couneil Bluffs ey shortly under- stand the situation sufficiently to see to it that this grasping company does not secure another ruinous charter. The Republican says this is not the time to advocate aggressive action upon the gas question, and then branches nW in an admiring sketch of Hon. Wright. It has been claimed (m' some time that the Republican represen tive entertains a feeling of high regard for Mr. Wright's pocketbook. This clusive franch is bosh. and the su- preme court would not recognize it a minute, Beyond the shadow “of u doubt, the vresent company forfeited all right to retain_ its charter, and the council ean and ought to repeal it.
