On the approach of the trackwen I pitched my tent on the grade, just inside the wire fence on the east side of my farm, moved my family into it, unfurled the stars and stripes from the center pole and pn'p«\h'h to live and take it easy. When the railroaders approached they evidently thought that a picnic was be- fore them. I guess they changed their minds, however, for they soon found out that [ meant business. I gave them fair warning, b v. tried to be gentle- manly about it. “Did they make any attempts to go on with the grading?” “At first they were inclined that way, but I convinced them that they had better go slow. 1 told them that I would protect my farm with my life, and I meant it.” *But th Missouri Pacific fellows caused injunctions to be issued yo nml also your arrest, did the, Oh, udge Field issued an in- juncti or last Monday, but I promptly countered it with one from Judge Chap- man while my wife held the fort, as you newspaper men cail it. He asked us to promise to obey the order of the court, or to give bonds for our ap- pearance in court. We declined to do ikis, and he ordered us committed to the county jail. Our children were with us. ‘The sheriff, however, thought better of the matter and took us to a hotel, v\hure we spent last night very pleasantly.” “You have made a settlement with the company, I understand? *1 have, sir; the Missouri Pacific paid me £5.000 in cash to day, and the com- pany can now go its way in peace. I was protecting my own property, and I had a right to assert the right of possession. his is all there is in the matter. Mr. Howe was fair and just and I thank him for his kindness.
