Some conductors ran locomotives in the place of the enzincers and others were in open sympathy with the strikers, but they acted as individuals, Our order s no con- trol over the action of its members m such matters. It cannot order a man to quit worl or to to work. There undercurrent of dark rumors about the case of one Rotholz, wao was ar- rested late Sunday night as a suspicious character. Rotholz was a meanly clad fel- low but on his person was found $311, and this with his sneaking air and evasive an- swers have made the police believe that they had captured a most dangerous crook. He' is suspected of counection with the dis- appearance of Charles Collins on Sunday night and the fact that the amount of money on his. person was about the same as tha carried by Collins only maies the suspicion strouger. The police could get no positive proof of his conncction with the af- fair, but they still believe that Collins has been murdered by some one for his mouey and they apprehend that Rotholz carries the secret of the crime in his br t. Ou putting up $475 as security, Rotholz released Mouday to appear for trial at 2 p. w, yesterday. At that hour Bennett, his attorney, appeared in court but Rotholz bad disappeared. Bennett, however, had a note signed by Rotholz asking the court to turn the #4765 over to his attorney. This, of course, the judge refused to do as there was a strong suspicion of something wrong about the transaction. 3efore this, Bennett had approached Will Gurley, the' ussistant dis- trict attorney, and offered to spend 100 in helping Gueley politically if that gentleman would assist him in gotting the $75 from the judge. Gurley most fiatly refused the bribe, The police believe that Rotholz made a full coufession of bis crime to Bennett and that the attorney managed to get out of him the order for the mouey by threats of exposure.
