THE OMAHA DAILY BER: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8. 1858 THE NEBRASEA STATE FAIR, It Will Be the Finest Exhibition of the Kind Ever Held. NEW AND NOVEL ATTRACTIONS. Special Efforts to Be Made to Call Attention to the Probabilities of the “Undeveloped West,” 1020 P SrrEs Lixcows, Sept. 4. State fair successes will be crowned this year by Nebraska. It is now reasonably cer- tain that the greatest fair ever held in the state is at hand. Secretary Furnas and his large corps of able assistants have no doubt of this fact. They are working day and night to provide ways and means to properly care for the attractions that will be put on exhibition. More extensive arrangemants are demanded than ever before, and every energy is bending to provide them. Six large quartermasters’ tents have been or- @cred from Chicago, and Governor Thayer has promised three that belong to the state, all of which will be crowded with Ne- braska wonders, 80 arrangod as to display their attractions to the best possibleadvantage, Skillful hands steer tho ship, and nothing is neglected that prom 1ses to score a single point. Agricultural products will be on exhibition from over forty counties in the state. In tiis line, especially, the “undeveloped west” will be represented, and such an exhibition is promised and assured as has never before heen seen in any state of the union. Fifty-six car loads of products are already on the round. This alone is without a parallel. At o'clock the records showed over three hun- dred entries for the day. The state industrial special exhibit. Superintendent Mallalieu will attend with thirty urchins, charges of the state, and their handiwork will add a new feature to the great exhibition. Superintend ent Chase, of the United Stat indus- trial school, will also offe at tractions, prepared and made by Indian hands, and their productions will compete for some of the prizes and awards offc and not without probable success before the close of the great fair. De ates are in Des Moines und Omaha to-day for live stock and speed exhibition, wnd word came from Messrs, Kent and Grinnell that their tr would not prove a vain one. By the way, Des Moines is already repre- sented. In the textile fabric departin y entres have been made. Others are sured. Kansas Colorado will exhibit in the special de| ts, and will try com- ctition with Nebraska for some of the onors and awards. Four counties of these states will exhibit agri- cultural products, and others will be represented by live stock and i the speeding. Such general interest has never before been taken in uny fair held in the state. The management has been forced to build new stalls for horses that will be on exhibition. All the pens preparcd for hogs have been taken. But the promise for sheep exhibits is not this year as last. The caitle display will be greater Indeed, the sume thing can be said of every other livo stock department. will be no dearth in the attractions offere The display of thorougiibred stock will be especially fine and gratitying. Great effort has been made to huve the state do herself justice in this regard. The best herds of cat- tle of the state will be represented. Kansas will also exhibit some of her best strains of Polled Angus blood. But nothing in this line has beon neglected and some arrivals are already noted. To-morrow will be a busy day at the fair grounds. It will be a busy time from now until the finish. The Guarantee Investment company, of Atchison, Ian., has offered a special pre- premium of 8100 for the best exhibit of agri- cultural products raised_between the 100th and the 10:d meridians, Perkins county has erected a sod house on the grounds that will bein line with the general eccentricities of that county. But it is said that the display will be up 1o a high standar ‘I'he agricultural machinery exhibits will be udusually large. Some of the tent accommodations will have to be used to provide them with required quarters. Butas with this, so it will be in most all other respects, and it is no idle statement to say that Nebraska is on the eve of the grandest public cxhibition she has ever given, LixcoLs BUREAU of Tur Ovana Bee, } school will make a THE RATE SCHEDULE. Notwithstanding the remonstrance re- cently filed from Grand Island against the action of the state board of transportation in reducing freight rates, a large majority of the citizens and business men of that city Lieartily endorse the action of the state board. The remonstrances that have been filed agninst the re duction ~ prove to be misleading in almost every instance. They represent the favored class and voice their ntiments nlone. The following paper received and filed by Clerk Waring to-day goes a long way toward proving this fact Gurann Istaxn, Neb., August 81, 1888, —To the Honorable State Board of Transperta- tion: We, the undersigned citizens of Grand Tsland, respectfully state: We believe that y investigation in net earnings of the railronds are in the state. ond—We believe that you were honest when you said by youraction that the froi rates were too high and the railroads w taking more money from the people than ought to; and when you ordered a r duction of about 15 per cent on the local rates yon did it because you knew that it was right and just between man and man, Third—We do not believe that you were dishonest when you ordered the reduction of freight rates, and that you wanted to, or would do anything, under any circumstances whatever, that would cripple, injure or re- turd the railroad industry of this state, Fourth—But, sirs, we do believe that you ordered the reduction of freight rates in the interest of all the people of this state; you did it in the interest of our manufacturers; you did it in the interest of our jobbers; you did it in the interest of our farmers; you did it to protect the people of the state against railroad extortion and greed; therefore, we, the undersigned, do heartily endorse your action and the prayer of your petitioners is that you may have the courage to stand by what you know is just and right. The foregoing paper was signed by sixty of Grand Island’s business men, representatives lass of business transacted in that it tears the remonstrance filed from » into shreds. There is nothing city, an that pl left of it WOMEN IN BUS han Nebraska no state in the union has ater reason to be proud of her women, fiu.-y bob up serenely from every quarter of the state; they have entered the arena of pro- fessional life side by side with exacting man. They have demonstrated their ability to get there. Not satisfied with standing they again make a move on the checker d of life, and four of Bartley's fair duughters will operate a live mercantile ag in Red Willow county. They pro Pose to buy and sell real estate and tran- sact a general auxiliary ousivess, and for this purpose have formed a joint stcok com- mny at Bartley, wheie they have estab- [ishad thetr principal place of ~ busines thorizing a capital stock of $15,000, of whick §7,500 was paid in hand May 1, 1888, and {rom that date business continuance was or dered for a period of twenty long, weary years, It is presumed that offers of wmar- riage are eschewed uniess, perchance, the liege lord and master shall give a good bond that will rock the eradle and attend to all of the duties of this life. The Bartley Mercantile company filed ar- ticles of incorporation with the secretary of stute to-day. This is the only company oper- uted by ladi \! doing business in the state, having records at thestato house. The mcorporators are: Ursela Bartley, Charity Alley, Else Alley and A, Wiley.
