The establishment of one or more deep harbors on the Texan coast does not affect lowa as directly us it does other states represented at this convent It being a natiol movement, howeve one which lowa's representatives in congress will be called upon to consider. It is essen- tiul that fowans should be posted in regurd to it. The advantages of such increased commereral facilities are claimed to be so fur reaching that lowa itself will shure to some extent, Another reason why Council Bluffs de- sired representation was that such a grow- ing, enterprising city should be heard from in every such great gathering of busine men. It was no little task for Council Blu to make its presence felt in a hering this magmtude and importance, but its little squad succeeded. One finds occasionally a face familiar to Council Bluffs, At Wells, Fargo & Co.’s oftice in Denver Mr. | A, Wells greeted his old Council Bluffs friends most cordially. He was forseveral years traveling auditor of the American Express company, with head- quarters in Council Bluffs. Recently he has been agent and assistant superintendent of the Welis-I"argo express at Denver. A day or tivo ago he received notice of his appoint- ment by W. H. Hancock to the position of general superintendent of the company’s busi- ness for lines east of Chicago, with head- quarters in that wonderful metropolis. This will be gratifying news, indeed, to his many frienas here. Mr. Wells 1s quite young for 80 importunt a position, being but twenty cight years of age. His experienceand ability will doubtless prove amply sufticient. Among_ others located at Denver is J. M. Browneil, who used to be Pull- man_ ticket agent at Council Bluffs He is now general manager for Denve great hotel, the Windsor, which was head- quarters for the delegates. Mr. Brownell takes great pains to make a Denver visit pleasant to all the guests, but there is an extra squeezo and a little warmer grasp for a Council Bluffs or Omaha hand. May Be Obtained From the Weed That Soothes, Tobacco is a nasty weed Which from the Devil doth proceed. But 1 can not say that I ever smoked my pipe with any less comfort and satisfaction after the reading. Perhaps it is unjust, but Ican never believe that these warnings were ever written by any one who had ever enjoyed the epicarean pleasure of a choice Havana or the succulent com- fort of a well-sensoned pipe. The writer presents himself to my imagination a slim, bilious wight, minutely anxious as to the digestibility.ofshis dinuer, fearful of a draft that o taste of smoke in the air sots him coughing., stiff and upright in his pos- tures, unconscious of the pleasures of a lounge. 1If he knows mnything of the weed by experience, it is in a eigarette. The cigarette smoker knows nothing of the pleasure of tobaccg. Kven if he is conceded the pure leaf it bis little toy, he has not the deep and growing plens- ure in his smoke that the user of th old form knows. There is the same like- pungent, thirstiprovoking, cching voll of paper gea Tull-flavored gar or pipe as in a glass of absinthe to a foaming tankard of ale. But who has seasoned pipe or a meerscham, or who has smoked a real Cuban cigar, not too strong, not too dry, nor yet too moist, and does not know the pleasuve that i hjdden in that magiec leaf? What more graceful than the shapes in which ——the blue wreaths fioated up Like incense on the air. as the rich brown of his cigar changed to ashen grays and adeep sense of peace stole round him, while all the brightest scenes of the past floated dreamily through his mind, and he felt Hope brighten days to come And mem'ry gild the past? But in the woods, upon the breezy hilltops, along the rippling streams with rod and ln, afloat on a shady river, or sailing ov the long surges of the summer sea, or, best of all, by one’s own fireside on a cool winter's evening, what is lileg o pipe? Whether it is a curiously carved meerschaum whose deepening brown fills the owne heart with pride, or a serviccable briar, or a democratic corn cob, matters'not, so that it is mellowed with that indeseribable quality we call sweetness, telling of long use and many tragrant clouds that have cirveled round and through it. A good pipe is a good friend. As you take it upand tenderly fill 1t for a smoke you ave re- minded of all the pleasant times it has helped you to enjoy, of all the adven- it has shar with you. Perhay it was the gift of a human friend, per- haps picked up in some by way of travel. READ THE NEWS. the public, and_ it was one of every-day accurrences. 1 was dining one day with Liszt—Ah, that dear little dining- room; how distinctly I see it now, plain and neat, the square table at which I have had so many charming hours, and the weird etching that hung on the wall, of a bel tower full of bats and owls. As we were finishing our repast, 1 saw through the open door a poor Po- lish girl, who was in the master’s class, slip deprecatingly into the salon. Liszt saw her, too, and rising went to herand brought ber to the table and gave her a glass of wine with the same cour tesy that he would have shown a coun- tess. As we left the dining room, I noticed that he slipped something into her hand. Frau Appel, his thrifty housekeeper, saw it too, and she came to me with a rueful face. It secems that Liszt was in the habit of regularly giv- ing this girl money wherewith to ‘go to her home, and she as regularly spent it and continued to remain in Weimar, Her talent was not remarkable, and she wias too poor even to rent a pinno. For that the master also paid. He wished her to go back to her parents, and was continually providing her the means for such purpose, but she would not go, no doubt preferrving Litszt’'s bounty to the poverty of her Polish home. Liszt was generous to prodigality, and this is but o nstance. Lknow of a very amusing ancedote concerning Dr. Von Bullow For once the erratie little doctor was the vieti of his own caprice. He sat regarding the treasure with mournful eyes—his eyes, by the wuy are beautiful, 1 forget-me-nots dipped in dew. The situation was pathetically absurd. He tried to make his dog stand, but of course it toppled over constantly. At last he propped it up by another dog that had escaped the majd’s duster, and ecxclaimed triumphantly “There, he can stend in_the world by the aid of his compunion.” There was not a bit of affectation about the whole affair, He was simply unhappy over the accident a child would have been, avier Scharwenka is the opposite of Moszkowski, and yet one often sees these names together.
